If you could build the perfect FCP system to allow 10-bit 1:1, SDI Digibeta interface, 4 Channel digital audio, easy use and setup, reliability and real-time effects, and none of the firewire preview delay you get with external firewire systems, what would you build?

My understanding is that this would be a good system:

    2TB HUGE optical array
Kona 2 (to allow for HD)
G5 Dual 2.7 w/ Tiger and Final Cut 5 Studio
    DVI/VGA dual monitors for editor
    50in Plasma client HD monitor
Protools with an 002box for mixing,
and of course the small stuff like waveform vectorscope, mixer, studio speakers, etc.

If Protools is on the same system as FCP, I could theoretically only use Protools as a mixer and then use the Kona 2 4 channel to layback the protools work to tape, right?

What would you do to make the best system?
    Thanks!

Just click on my Profile and look at the first system on that list. That’s pretty much my “Dream System” setup until the next generation of PowerMacs are released. You can visit my website and look at the setup in the “Wally World” room, though those shots are about 6 months old and don’t have the plasma screen.

I much prefer Medea arrays to HUGE so I run the FCR2X here for Fibrechannel along with a lot of assorted FW800 drives and arrays.

On the Plasma display, decide how big your room is going to be before you go with the 50″. My room is 13 1/2 feet front to back and our 42″ looks perfect in the room. A 50″ would actually be a bit too big for this room.

Add a WACOM tablet and a Bella Pro Keyboard and you’re pretty well set.

I’d go Decklink HD Pro and a 5.6TB Xserve Raid – we’re all going to go Xsan eventually!

I agree with the Wacom however I’ve got a Logic keybord. The new HD Tekronix WVR7100 scope would be nice, if a bit pricey. (Paul where’s the plugin???)

Genelec for audio and don’t forget a BVM Grade 1, the 24E widescreen if you’ve got the money, my 20″ does fine though.

Great info, thanks. I’m coming from Avid so having so many options for configuration is a little overwhelming. Could I theoretically get fw800 drives, stripe them together, and be done with the storage issue?

My understanding was the for true uncompressed I need at least a 10k RPM drive to handle the amount of data coming in. Is this a wrong assumption, of is that just for Avid?

FYI Walter, I was an editor at CNN from 97-99. Looks like I just missed you.

Great point on the XServ. I just checked it out. Assuming I add a second FCP room in a few months, the XServ would be capable of working both systems at once (like Avid unity), right?

Yes, but you need more hardware, a metadata controller, fibre channel switch, dedicated GigE network plus Xsan licences for each client.

There’s been a lot of info on the Xsan forum here on the Cow.

I’m building my dream system right now. Everything in this system is as I’d like it, except for storage…

    G5 2.7
    4GB Ram
    2×400 GB Sata
    2 23″ Cinema Displays
    Sony 14″ d-series monitor
    Tascam audio console
    2 800GB G-Raids
    Kona 2
    Kona IO
    Kona KBox breakout box
Panasonic 32″ HD LCD client monitor
    Peavey speaker system with amp
    Panasonic DVCPro50 VTR – 930B
    Sony BVW-1800
    Two new plush client/nap chairs
    coffee table
bookshelf for all the awards I plan on winning with this system

P.S. Not only are we installing two of these, but getting an SDX900 also….GOSH I LOVE EDUCATIONAL GRANTS!

Aww, too bad on that one. I went back for a visit recently and it’s so different I couldn’t even figure out where Feeds used to be. And I miss the old “Edit Row” with all the bays down one hallway. It was a fun time, before Fox News came along and pretty much killed the party.

Clients are wowed by plasma monitors. I’m still ol’fashioned. Can’t work on anything but my big fat SONYs.
