  • Don’t install Tiger with FCP 4.5 — Is apple a scam?

installed Tiger, “the world’s most advanced operating system” and now all my programs act crazy. fun. is there anyway to uninstall Tiger? doubt it, that would be too easy. I guess I have to upgrade to all new software – how convenient for Apple. amazing how there OWN software is so incompatible. For the past five years it’s been the same story, upgrade to this, then that doesn’t work, so you have to buy this, then you upgrade Quicktime and all hell breaks lose and you have to upgrade everything. Two years later you do it all over again. Oh, and you can’t upgrade educational software anymore, you gotta buy the whole thing again – awesome. and call me crazy, but it’s hard for me to believe that they couldn’t make tiger compatible with FCP 4.5. and judging by apples website you would never know any of this occurs. do they have to oversell every product like it’s revolutionary when its all in fact very buggy. Has anyone at apple ever actually tried DVD Studio Pro? Is it fair to call Motion ‘real-time’ when it’s only real time on simpel projects with top of the line line G5s with 2 gigs of ram – which probably makes up 2% of the time Motion is used on this planet. But i guees it’s all my fault in the end, why did i install Tiger, do I really need Widgets?

I have to admit. Motion sucks. The moment you throw more than 5 layers at it, it comes to a halt. And not to even mention the crashes once it’s embedded into a FCP sequence.

I’ve had zero problems with Tiger and FCP 4.5.

Did you do a clean upgrade by wiping your hard drive? It’s a pain, but that’s the best way to ensure a perfect upgrade. Before you do that, though, have you tried erasing Final Cut entirely and re-installing it? There’s clearly something wrong, but it’s not Tiger, so don’t go out and buy Final Cut 5 just because of this.

Didn’t have a choice, the dual 2.7 came with tiger. All pro apps are running fine. Even my io and kona 2 get along great. Yet, I still put in that order for fcp5. Hi Apple, you make life easy, here’s my money.

FCP has been running smoother on Tiger on my G4 dual 1.25
MOTION is way faster now (not that it was slow before as I use a 9800)
the new audio filters with Tiger are great
    hmm
I did a clean install on a fresh drive and reinstalled all the pro apps, took maybe 3 hours total
    everything is running great

I did a clean install and put in just FCP and Motion and FCP was crashing and when we tried to do a round trip to Motion none of the effects came back to FCP in th Motion file. I’m going to wait a little while, were back on 10.3.8 and everything is fine again.

[chris lambert] “installed Tiger, “the world’s most advanced operating system” and now all my programs act crazy. fun. is there anyway to uninstall Tiger? doubt it, that would be too easy. “

So why are you still running a Mac? Go buy a PC and some other software. I just checked the Apple website again and I don’t see the command, “You MUST BUY Tiger now and you MUST run it or else.” Upgrades are optional and you chose to install it. I choose to run Tiger on my laptop and client internet G4 in my company for the time being until FCP 5 comes out. FCP 4.5 is running great on OS 10.3.8 so why upgrade right now since FCP 5 is so close to being released.

Now back to your upgrade…..Did you erase your drive and completely start over by first installing Tiger, then your apps? That is the preferred way of installing any new operating system on a Mac, especially when running Pro Apps. Everytime I move from one OS to another, I clone my System Drive, then wipe it clean and start over. Install the OS, run any updates, then install my software, one app at a time and completely update that app and test it before installing the next app. Generally takes me 2 – 3 days to completely upgrade my system from one OS to another.

Did you do this or simply upgrade your OS? I’m betting you just did the upgrade. That’s a 50/50 chance of working correctly. As noted in this very thread, some folks are running just fine on Tiger. You’re not, so wipe your drive clean and start all over.

Simply put, you HAVE to reinstall Pro Apps after a clean install of Tiger, if you don’t do that, any problems you have are your fault! We did it and all is working very well, which is excellent considering it is a new OS.
