FWIW, those of us with a great deal of experience using Firestore (and the other) FW hard drive recorders (since the very beginning) KNOW that these things have issues. Just because you got it to work once isn’t necessarily cause to dance in the aisle. They were a great idea when also using tape as backup, but everyone I know that has a lot of experience with these, gets real nervous at the notion of it as the ONLY recording medium. We’ve all been burned on this.
I have told everyone (including Panasonic) that I have zero interest in the Firestore or similar FW recorders. That isn’t inexperience talking, it’s a lot of serious experience talking.
Christopher, I’m glad it worked for you, but I wouldn’t be breaking out the champagne just yet. Personally, I’ll be waiting for something that isn’t FW based. Something with locking cables and no FW codec chips getting in the way. In other words, something as solid as P2. One can only hope the Cineporter (or something like it) really does make it to market…

You (and the others) are correct. The Firestore does not support all the modes. The biggest disappointment is the lack of native support. There is also the uncertainty of those FW codec chips in the mix and the lack of a secure (locking) cable system. The Cineporter (when/if) it arrives will eliminate those shortcomings.

I guess I’m the only one that thought the FireStore mounting up on top of the camera looked more ungainly and caused more counter-balance issues than the Cineporter. Of course, having that hard drive motor and any fan right next to the microphone is exciting as well…

I agree with Jeremy and Gary. You need a Kona and a monitor to produce things properly. Looking at a computer LCD isn’t it. But then, I think you need a monitor with a WFM in the field to get it right in the first place…

lots of hissie fits on this thread !”I never said a G-Raid wouldn’t work. It should, after all, it’s a two drive RAID. It should outperform a single drive, regardless of whether it’s a 400 or an 800.
What I said was, as your timelines become more complex, you may discover some limitations. We’ve managed to (on occassion) overload a four drive SATA array, which has a throughput of several times what Shane has listed for his G-Raid test. Shane’s right… you should only buy what you need, based on the kind of editing you do. Shane mentioned he has two G-Raids… creating a raid out of both of those should take him a very long way before he needs anything else.
Many people on this forum are editing DVCPro HD using raids a lot more sophisticated than the four drive array we have. Obviously, they have a reason for choosing those.

Shane, Is your EZQuest a single drive… the data rate would seem to indicate that? The G-Raid has two drives inside, so of course it’s faster in a dual drive raid configuration. Attributing this difference to 400 vs. 800 seems like a dubius conclusion to reach?

Many of us can relate to your quandry. It’s the reason some of us haven’t purchased MacBook pro’s yet. As Noah pointed out, not as of today. Panasonic did display (as opposed to show) an external 2-slot reader at NAB. I believe there is an earlier thread on here concerning that. You might search for it? I don’t recall Jan giving any date for it’s release, but I may be mistaken…

Jeez David. First I “seemed to” then I “outright did”. Which one is it? Since that is rather common knowledge, I interjected something less well known, to further the discussion. If you took it as me discounting the idea entirely, then apparently I should apologize… and promise to make any future posts longer and more detailed. Forgive me for assuming a certain level of knowledge on this forum.
Let me end my contribution to this thread by recommending that anyone editing DVCPro HD consider a SATA configuration over something FW. As an early pioneer in that area, I think you’ll find it much more gratifying. Since we edit a lot of DVCPro HD and P2, we find the FW solutions work fine on simple things involving very few tracks, whereas the SATA option offers more capability. Hopefully this opinion won’t offend anyone’s delicate sensibilities…
