At least the raw clips will play back on the FCP timeline… as long as you don’t need monitor playback… ouch!

I think you’ve hit it on the nailhead. I’ll go one further, I’ll bet the video division of Canon is saying, “hey, we don’t have anything selling like that 5D/7D, we need to do something”. I personally thing that Canon is the only company that could stuff a 5D sensor in an H2 body, because they don’t have anything upstream to cannibalize sales from. Sony and Panasonic have a problem… if it’s too good, how you going to sell those 3700, 2700, 900 and 950 cameras? Same problem we’ve always had…

I was under the impression that the 5D has onboard audio recording? I believe a firmware update added on-board recording to the 5D. Of course, the 7D has onboard recording.
We used a Zoom H4 for external recording. I believe most people are using one of those…

I’m going to have to disagree, based on my experience. I haven’t switched, but I have worked with it. First, the 5D came out first, so it’s strictly 30.00. The 7D which just came out doesn’t have any of the issues you’re describing. The 30P is 29.97. The 24p is 23.98, and it has 25p (haven’t used it). Given that, it isn’t a big stretch that either the 5D mkIII or the firmware update will have exactly the same thing.
Second, the raw clips will play in FCP without any rendering or re-encoding, which makes them a lot less trouble than my P2 or somebody’s EX-1. You can also us Pro-Res, which is no more trouble than P2, SxS, or AVC.
So, I guess I’ll have to ask why you feel this way?

And this is getting less clear all the time. Right now, the h264 clips from a 5D or 7D Canon can be thrown onto the FCP timeline, and if you say yes when asked if you want the sequence to be changed to match the clips, they play on the FCP timeline in realtime without rendering. So, somewhere deep inside, FCP has this ability and a codec for h264 playback.
Of course the Kona can’t play through to the monitors, so it’s a hollow victory.
I guess at the end of the day, we have to define what an editing codec is, or perhaps it’s being redefined for us?

When we first got the 8-core, we used the Apple RAID card and created one using all four bays. It worked great. The only reason we pulled the Apple RAID card was that we had a huge documentary with 40 hours of HDCAM to edit, so we needed an 8-drive RAID. Now the Apple RAID card just sits on the shelf, but we were happy with it when we used it…

We’re having the same problem. It starts out fine, but after awhile, every time I do anything, Motion pauses. I don’t always get the spinning beachball, but you can click to move the playhead and it can take up to 30 seconds before Motion catches up. It’s a real time waster.
This is an early 2008 8-core (2.8), with 16gb ram, nVidia 8800 GPU, 10.5.6, QT 7.6, Motion 3.02. FWIW, a colleague has the exact same problem on a Dual G5, with an x800XT GPU, 8GB ram, and all the same versions of software.
I’ve tried disabling the auto-save. I’ve tried closing the layers window (cmd-4). So far these things seem to help a small amount, but it doesn’t solve the problem. I’ve disabled all background processes in the user accounts… I’ve even tried having every single program closed except Motion, so it isn’t something else running in the background.
Motion clearly has a problem that needs to be addressed. This is adding a lot of unproductive time to the project (read: losing money) and it’s hurting us on deadlines. Apple, are you aware of this problem?

It affects more than just the 1TB models apparently, and it isn’t limited to just those made in Dec 08.
I have 11 of these drives that have one of the affected firmware numbers, and I have been using these drives for almost a year now. I wonder what the issue is?
