Perhaps, but I don’t think so. The only issues with UNIX involve the use of punctuation in the filename. All of these words can be used in file names and work fine under FCS, AE, Motion etc. It’s FCPX that seems to be having some kind of issue with some aspect of this.

How can the program tell whether a particular DCIM file is a proper camera clip or a finder tag for an asset collection? My brain can supply context based on where amongst the thousands of possibilities I put it – but I don’t think the computer’s directory is going to parse that.
So those of use who have been using card based cameras longer than you and doing finder copies without any issues are suddenly wrong. Okay…

So once again, we need to change the way that we do things because Apple has decided “theirs” is a better way. There’s a reoccurring theme here. Funny how we didn’t need to do that with ANY other program.
BTW, if I read that thread correctly, Steve Martin has confirmed that making disc images under Lion doesn’t work like it did under SL. In fact, I believe he said it doesn’t work. The Command File-New-Blank Disk Image has indeed been removed in Lion. Are you making Disk Images? If so are you using Lion? If so, I’d like to know how you you are doing it?

I believe the point being made was that the design was altered in the next version the 4s. Those with the iPhone4 were told that the problem was imaginary and here’s your phone condom to make everything all right. That was a P.R. disaster and worthy spin of some pathetic political party, not Apple.
As I said in another post, we should expect more of this. This is the Tim Cook way… bring everything to market faster. At some point you start out driving your headlights and you begin to have a string of less than stellar releases… like the iPhone 4… FCPX, OSX Lion, and iCloud. Forget any perceived shortcomings, they all had major defects that made it past testing and into the public release. In the past, that wouldn’t have happened with Apple. As Dylan said, “the times they are a changing”.
Too be fair to Apple, this isn’t unique to them. Mercedes went from #1 in quality to a severe drop, until they publicly admitted it, and then increased the product testing cycle back to what it was before they release a product to the public. Maybe Apple will make the same decision at some point?

What your describing here is “good enough” not good. When fast and cheap come into play, good is always the variable that gets adjusted. This will never change. Cheaper Chinese nails work, just not as well, and they rust easier. Cast iron pitman arms work, just not as well as forged ones in tough off-road situations. If you don’t care about those things then “good enough” is the same as good, which I believe is really the point..
What will (and has) changed is our view of what is “good enough”. In that regard I agree… the competition that thrives is the one that makes it to “good enough”, doing it quickly and cheaply. The democratization of video has made “good enough” socially acceptable, and I have no problem with that. For decades a lot of us have discussed this point… the most common example being “let’s face it… how much quality do you need when shooting and editing an internal sales meeting”? The truth, not much… it’s 100% content that counts there. Virtually any image quality will work.
Which brings us back to Apple. They are clearly focused on “good enough” or as someone else put it: “good enough for 80% of the market”. I’d agree, and there is nothing wrong with that, and they don’t need our permission to do it that way. Does this mean that I don’t long for the Apple of old. In a word, no. The iPhone 4 antenna shortcomings were a disappointment and more worthy of MS. Lion is the worst OS release since the Lisa 7/7 software… scores of problems that should have been caught before release. FCPX is half-baked… like the obvious titler bug that anyone would have caught, yet it took 5 months to get it fixed. iCloud is providing more problems than solutions and doesn’t even have the two best features of MobileMe.
Will all of this get fixed? I would like to think so… but I’d prefer not to be an involuntary beta tester on all this stuff. I’d prefer to have a choice of a properly functioning option to use while I assist in developing the rough future replacement into something worthy of public release.
This I believe is the “Tim Cook” legacy. That’s his thing… getting everything to market quicker. The problem is (as Mercedes can attest) is that this results in unfinished product coming to market with embarrassing mistakes in it. Mercedes only switched back after sales dropped. Apple’s sales haven’t dropped… at least not yet…

Okay, I’m confused. This is the group you keep saying is the whole focus of FCPX. You keep saying that it’s a slim minority that needs all the things that are being discussed on the other forum. So, I give up, which one are you championing?

As much as I’m sure this is going to disappoint you, I happen to agree with your analysis. However, one sort of assumed that you might be able to decide whether or not to use it, kind of like compound clips?

This could be part of the clip or the entire clip.
I was going mad trying to find that function in FCP X!”
Nice feature. We had that in an NLE called Incite back in 2000. That’s a feature people would be happy to say they got from iMovie…

Same here… using FCS3 a lot. Like a lot in FCPX, just wish it was farther along in development…
