In FCP Browser select all the clips from the same camroll. Go to the Tools menu and hit Synchronize with Cinema Tools. Tell the app to create a new Cinema Tools database, add new records, auto connect. In the created Cinema Tools database fill in Scene, Take, KeyKode, Cam Roll, Lab Roll data for each clip. Make sure to check the KeyKode a few frames after the head of each clip and a few frames before the tail. Go back to FCP and synchronize selected clips but this time point to your working database and uncheck “Add new record” and “Auto connect”. Repeat for each camroll.
If by “EDL” you mean a negative cut list you can still log your footage into the Cinema Tools database after you started or finished your edit providing there are no KeyKode breaks in the captured clips. That means every clip has to be either a single take or a single camroll.
It has hardware RGB<>YUV conversion and alpha support. None of the “modern” FCP-compatible cards have anything like this so until Apple moves FCP processing engine from CPU to GPU keep that contraption around.
There is no such thing as “Avid EDL”. EDL’s were meant for linear edit controllers and named after different models of these controllers. The one which carries the most information is CMX3600. Avid EDL utility defaults to CMX340 by the way and you cannot tell it by just glancing at the interface. There might be also an issue of frame rate difference between HD and HD

I use 1 sec. pre-roll for capture from BetaSP, Digibeta and DV for several years with very few problems. For editing back to tape you need 5 sec. anyway.
