The real reason companies use AJA is capture cards make a small fraction of AJA’s product lists which is made up mostly of converters, embedders, distributing amplifiers etc. When you wire up a decent size facility you need a ton of this stuff. If Snell & Wilcox or Tektronix were making capture cards they would be as popular as Kona in this segment.
The history of BMD’s engineering goes all the way back to Digital Voodoo. There was enough engineering there to let Bluefish to hang around until today without engineering anything for like five years.

Final Touch worked with Kona better than it worked with Decklink, when it worked at all. You know that.

If Canvas is the active window Command-A will select the current clip but Canvas is rarely the active window while you work.

Why OEM people use Bluefish then? Or DVS at 10x the price of Kona?

Walter, your perspective is very different from mine. You own your gear. I freelance and use clients’. You used FinalTouch and now Color. I’m strictly FCP. I run into like ten Decklinks for every Kona or iO. They all work fine.
As for big guys using this or that brand I believe Kona or Decklink could handle all Baselight, Nucoda or MATRIX systems’ I/O needs but they use BlueFish and DVS.

AJA’s better quality is a myth. First, there are more BMD products out there. More products – more users. More users – more complains. Second, AJA’s products for Windows and for Mac carry different names but BMD’s carry the same names, so when the guy’s having problems with Xena it doesn’t make Kona look bad, but if it is DeckLink it is DeckLink.

Find out how they record production sound. Most likely it is some sort of hard disk recorder. You will be given BWF files on CD/DVD-ROM’s or a back-up HDD. You will need sound reports.
Find out how do they transfer dailies. You will need 24@25 (picture sped-up ~4%, every film frame is one video frame) tapes, Video TC, Lab Roll, Cam Roll, KeyKode burn-in. You will need telecine log files. If the log files are Scene&Take, that’s great. If not it means more work for you but that’s OK. You won’t need sound synced to picture at telecine
