The default “quality” setting in the encoder’s advanced settings is 5. Change it to 3 and the encode times drop dramatically…close to real time on a 3.0 P4 ht. Any effects added to clips can cause long encode times, especially color correction and blur.

You are pretty close… The process is call Track Matte. Put video in V1 and V2. Put the black and white track matte in V3. Turn off the eyeball for V3 and apply the track matte effect to v2. There are some settings in the effects controls window that you need to select V3 as the matte and Luma as the key type.

I also teach Pro and other video apps at a school. DV cameras “connect” about 10% of the time. I have 2 camcorders that, after attemting to connect at school, will now not connect at home…possbly ruined firewire connections.
The PCs are Dell with XP service pack 1 plus lots of SP2 hot fixes. The PCs have PCI 1394 cards. I have had MIS look into things but to no avail. I suspect the Novell networking software.
We are now configuring removable drives with just XP and no Novell networking stuff for Video Editing. -
Is it possible to centre both channels of a stereo track? (Yet another rather important issue!)
The audio mixer has a Pan knob to adjust the relationship between stereo tracks.

Another option would be to export Pro’s timeline as Mpeg 2 elementary streams. I do this often with photo montages without issues in Encore. -

Pro cannot lift or extract multiple tracks. It can do lift/extract to all tracks, by nesting one sequence in another sequence.
I cant imagine the need to lift/extract two video clips, but then again my range is red dirt south of Kansas and north of Texas…
It is quite possible that Pro can accomplish what you need using a slightly different workflow, like turnring a track output off. After all, the Avid apps seem just as strange to many Pro folks as Pro must seem to you. -
Using network drives for video editing in a corporate enviounment can be a nightmare, even without your issues. If the server thinks some one else is using the file, you cant save changes. The server is working against many of your needs that are peculiar to editing video.
All files should be on a local disk, preferably without any Novell crap and with full Administrator rights.. -
Windows System keeps a back up copy in a Prefetch folder. Boot into safe mode and search for the .dll file…delete both copies, then you can remove the registry entry by removing it from device manager.
