Premiere Export to DVD Excessive Transcoding Time
Posted by Alex Dejesus on April 14, 2005 at 3:51 amHow long should a 50 minute sequence take to transcode at 7 MB/Sec? Is the speed a function of RAM or processor speed, or both? A 30 minute program took about 40 minutes at 4 MB/sec. This longer project is going on 2 1/2 hours. I just need to know what’s normal.
Also, My Sony VIAO has the Windows XP with the Media Center installed. Could that potentially cause problems with any of the Adobe applications?

April 14, 2005 at 4:16 amWhat are the specs of your computer? And yes, PPRO does have exceptionally long export times for DVD encoding. If you have Encore, I would use that.

April 14, 2005 at 6:43 amI’ve exported to DVD 15, 30 and 60 minute sequences. The longest is 60 minutes to keep the resolution high, and it always take a very long time. I’d say easily 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours for a 60 minute show. But those have been screeners from HDV timelines, so I think that has a lot to do with it.

April 14, 2005 at 11:28 amThe default “quality” setting in the encoder’s advanced settings is 5. Change it to 3 and the encode times drop dramatically…close to real time on a 3.0 P4 ht. Any effects added to clips can cause long encode times, especially color correction and blur.

April 14, 2005 at 1:31 pmThanks. I feel better about the transcode time. But, the machine is slowing down as I get further into the project. Windows take a while to open up, etc. I was wondering what on my computer is slowing it down.
Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz, 1 Gig RAM should perform better. Is there still aproblem with XP service pack 2, or the Sony Media Center? I do have Norton Internet Security installed. Disabling it doesn’t help. -

April 14, 2005 at 5:33 pmHow big is your project? Do you have a lot of raw footage? Any filters?

April 14, 2005 at 7:26 pmAanarav,
It took over twoo hours for a 54 minute sequence. There are no filters. Just a few short titles over one video track and one audio track. I made it simple so that I could export direct to DVD.

April 14, 2005 at 7:28 pmAanarav, I also trimmed the project so that I could eliminate the excess raw footage from my hard drive, then I de-fragged.
