1.A crude method might involve duplicating the clip and put it on V2 over the original on V1, apply the correction to V2 and then apply a 8 or 16 point garbage matte to V2 and use it to make transparent area of V2.
2.A track matte key is a bit more elegant but requires a lot more work.
3.Most elegant would be using method 1 but in After Effects with a feathered mask to key out parts of track 1 and apply effects to track 1. Much easier to keyframe mask properties than in Pro.

With a bad s/video cable your captured video would just be black, not cause an error…check the firewire from the box to the 1394 card.

A bad firewire cable can cause this, I have pitched several. Also turn off all external firewire devices during capture.

If your PC is fast enough, the DV.mov files mught play out to tape from the timeline without using the Export option which would require a rerender, but the DV editing mode is the only Project setting that will play out via firewire.

I dont see a way of exporting your project as SD without first exporting it as either cineform.avi or Windows Media Video.wmv and then import that into a SD project, reducing the scale to 33%. Then it needs to get rendered again as DV or Mpeg for DVD…to many generations.
Maybe someone has a better solution than recapturing as DV. -
Often the problem is with Windows audio settings in Control Panel. Try using Windows Sound Recorder to configure and test your PC, then Pro should work fine.

I am not in front of a FX-1 now, but dont think it has a “widescreen” mode like other cameras which is SD. If your shot your video in HDV mode which is of course “wide” then your Project setting preset must be either HDV 1080i-29.97 or HDV 720p-29.97 and your video must be captured with one of these.
If you shot in DV mode then you will need to use a DV project setting.
The format of the captured video will be much different depending on your Project setting.
Is your captured video 720 or 1440 wide? -
DV from DV cams is lower field first, although it is possible that your vid was exported and changed from FCP as uppper or none.

Using the Motion effect, enable keyframing for Scale-Horizontal (toggle animation) and experiment with settings wider than 100% every few frames.
