I run AE 6.5 on the same computer at home. I’d recommend getting Nucleo to speed up the previews & renders. I haven’t tested 7.0 or CS3 on it yet. You’ll notice huge improvements in performance with a nwere Mac, but it will work.

It sounds like you are trimming the layer’s in & out points or using the “slip edit” tool. Select the black pointer in the Tools pane. Highlight the desired layer. Click somewhere in the middle of the layer and drag it to the desired location. OR move the CTI (current time indicator) to the desired new in point, highlight your layer and hit the “[” button.

AE tracks pixels, so when they go off screen the tracker gets lost. You have to manually move the track points off screen. It ends up being a lot of trial & error. Check out Aharon Rabinowitz’s new tutorial on tracking with Mocha & be amazed.

Are you sure you want to do that? If you go back to 6.1, you’ll be suffering from the 2GB RAM limit. ie. Your machine will lock up if you have more than 2GB of RAM installed. That issue was fixed in Decklink 6.3.

  • Great! We just bought Mocha as part of the AENY deal & haven’t had the opportunity to play with it yet. That tutorial will get me going. Can’t wait for a rotoscoping tutorial… that’s primarily what we bought it for.

August 20, 2007 at 2:35 pm in reply to: Is a render farm worth the trouble with CS3?

It’s definitely worth it. I use AE’s Watch Folder feature. I know other people prefer 3rd party apps like Smedge, etc., but most problems with Watch Folder are a result of not having all of the required fonts, effects and codecs installed on the farm machines, and that problem applies to 3rd party apps as well. Once you get the Watch Folder work flow down its pretty reliable. There’s really no reason to wait around while your workstation renders. Even with a small farm, it’ll render faster than your workstation, and you can be working on a different project while it does.

Did you try using NP2’s RAM previews (Cmd-Shift)? If you set Performance Level to Maximum it’s just as fast or faster than AE’s MP RAM preview. Remember to turn off MP in AE’s Prefs to enable NP2.

This problem only happens with MP enabled.
