Or if you want to spend some money ($550 list), buy a Canopus ADVC300. It has a built-in TBC as well as some good noise reduction circuitry.

Does the deck have an E-E mode switch? If so, make sure it’s on.

George, Vegas does a great job on 24p. If your soundman has/wants version 6, it has a few improvments for 24p over version 5.
If your DV camera was a DVX100, there’s a white paper on it to read.
I guarantee that, once you try Vegas, you’ll wonder why Velocity’s audio can’t be even half as good 🙂Mike

Sounds like the clerks at your local computer store need to do some reading on the products they’re selling 🙁
Yes, there are several differences between the two.
The Vegas Family Comparison chart is a good place to start.
The biggest differences are that Movie Studio is limited to 4 tracks each of audio and video, doesn’t have 5.1 capability and limited colour correction tools.

Hi Chris. I just read your post. Very weird!!
Glad to see I wasn’t alone on this 🙁As mentioned here (and on other forums), my biggest complaint was that DVDA always wanted to re-render everything. I did try changing the field order on the imported clips. No difference. I changed the field order and re-rendered them as AVIs and brought them back in. Still no difference. Then Marco made that post, I did it and success!!
I have no idea why Canopus files cause this much grief but am happy I was able to solve my problem. I’ve sent an email to Sony asking them to please put the solution into their knowledgebase for anyone else.Let me know if this fix solves your problem.

I don’t understand why your MPEG2 files are having to be recompressed.
I agree with you Edward. It was extremely frustrating (not to mention time-consuming) to have to go through this process all over again 🙂
Until I have some time to further research this, I’m going to write it off to a combination of the Canopus & Microsoft AVI codecs.Mike

Forgot to say thanks to Ken as his suggestion was the solution.

In case anyone else runs into the same issue, I ended up using the Canopus DV File Converter and converted the Canopus AVI files to Microsoft DV (AVI 2) files. Brought them back into Vegas, rendered out to MPEG-2 & AC3, back into DVDA (where they had to recompressed) and made my DVD.

First of all, I’m assuming this was a firewire capture and not analog.
What kind of camera was used? I’m asking because I’ve done encodes of 2 hr. projects that looked very good on DVD – but they were shot with a 1/2″ 3-chip camera.
The settings I get using my bitrate calc (zipped version here) are as follows:
Max: 8000
Avg: 7200
Min: 3600
The higher Min value may help.
Also, you are using AC3 audio, right?Mike
