You can use a laptop but you’ll have to capture it first, put the clip on the timeline and apply the chroma key FX before you can find out if it’s working properly or not.
One suggestion is to shoot a few seconds of just the screen before the talent comes in. Makes it much easier to grab a large selection for the colour picker afterwards. -
It seems to be a problem with capturing DVCAM.
It’s not a DVCAM problem but a camcorder problem.
That’s why I asked you for your make/model.

What camcorder was used to make the original recording?
Try using Scenalyzer (a demo version is available) for the capture and see if that works for you.
It’s been known to work when VidCap fails at seemingly simmple tasks like this 🙁 -
It’s called PIP (Picture In Picture).
Use Pan/Crop or Track Motion.

Grab all of them while you’re they’re as they a valuable resource. -
Google “Andrea Mosaic”. It should be the first one that comes up.

In studio, you can select both clips, right click, then “combine clips” and it will join them back together.
Highlight both clips. Right click and select Open in Trimmer.
The single (joined) clip will be highlighted.
If this was part of a larger clip, only this selection will be highlighted.
Now drag it back to the timeline. -

what do you mean by deleting my preferences file?
He probably meant resetting all your prefs.
To do this, hold Ctrl-shift while opening Vegas.
Be advised that this will reset everything, including any custom presets and templates you’ve created. -
Use the wave form to do the editing on. Much more accurate than ‘doing it by ear’.

Helps if you have the preview set to lower quality setting..
Agreed. I usually set it to Preview(Auto).
What you can do (and what I do a lot in similar situations) is to drop markers on the timeline (M key) wherever I want to do an edit.
Makes it much easier to find the right spot.
