I’ve been using either Verbatim and Taiyo-Yuden and, after over 5 years, have not had any complaints from anyone.
The other recomendation is to never burn at the maximum rated speed.
I stick to 4X max for anything critical. -
If it’s acceptable, just do a Print-To-Tape and recapture it in FCP.

It’s the atm part I ‘ve never heard of before and I suspect this is your problem. -
Track Motion scales the image down to project size while Pan/Crop leaves it at the original size.

Pan/Crop works as well.

If you’re referring to an MPEG-2 render, lower the bitrate.
If not, please be more specific. -
Do both of those together (i.e. one after the other) and you’ll get a 1200% increase.
If that’s still not fast enough, render it out and do it again. -
You’re taking a file that’s already been compressed (depending on the original length, quite substantially) and recompressing it.
Therefore (if you use Vegas to do this) there will be a loss.Notice that I said “if you use Vegas”. That’s because Vegas recompresses every single frame, whether it needed to be or not.
There are programs like Womble and VideoReDo that recompress only the portions that were changed (for example, adding titles or other FX). If nothing was done to a frame, it won’t be further compressed.
The other advantage these have over Vegas is that they’re frame accurate while Vegas is not. -
I searched the Sony Vegas forum and went through the manual and the only thing I can suggest is to make sure the DV EE OUT on the VTR SET menu is OFF.
