Wayne is right when he says to just rip it to your hard drive.
Copy the contents of the DVD to your hard drive.
If it only has one VOB file, drag and drop that onto your Vegas timeline.
If there’s more than one VOB file, here’s a great technique to avoid the audio dropout that alwyas happens at the change point.Vegas allows you to open up a DVD .IFO file. This imports the entire .VOB chain for both video and audio tracks.
Click File / Open, then navigate to your VIDEO_TS sub directory and enter *.IFO in the File name input field. For a regular DVD you will see a VIDEO_TS.IFO, and a VTS_01_0.IFO. Select the VTS_01_0.IFO file and click on Open.
When you browse to the VIDEO_TS folder using “Import Media”, it will appear to be empty until you select “All Files (*.*) in the import box. Once you do that, all the files will be visible. Select the appropriate one, import it and drag it to your timeline.

If it was me, I’d use/take a still shot of the keyboard and add my lines in Photoshop or other paint program.
The other issue is that those lines are very fine and this adds to the jumpiness. Make them a bit thicker and see if that helps. -

John, unless I’m missing something, that software, as great as it looks, is currently for the Mac only 🙁

If you haven’t already done so, I recommend asking this question on the Sony Vegas Pro forum as there are some very knowledgeable users on there who use the R9 290X and know how to set it up.

Saying that it’s a QuickTime file doesn’t tell us anything as there are a variety of file types that claim to be QuickTime.
As Bob asked earlier, what does MediaInfo say about it? -
I have a Galaxy S3 and work with animation students who use Toon Boom a lot. I can drop both file types (as well as many more) on my Vegas timeline with no issues whatsoever.
I know that doesn’t help solve your problem. Just letting you know that it can be done. -

I’ve always had DVDA so I had no idea this had been fixed in Pro 9. -
John, I stand to be corrected but I’m pretty sure that, without DVDA, you can’t render an AC-3 file.

You’re welcome John. I found Device Explorer to be a bit unintuitive the first few times I tried it so kudos for sticking with it and figuring it out.

I have a JVC HM-750 and the process is the same. You need to copy the entire contents of the card (the BPAV folder) to your hard drive. After that, use Device Explorer to browse to that folder to extract everything.
