    Hello,

First i want to make clear that this all about timeline performance not
about render times as i don’t mind if would take longer and use my CPU for that.

I read a lot of forums and reading/googling for days and hours before i made the choice
to buy this card as i wanted to upgrade my NVIDIA GTX 670 FTW.

I installed yesterday my Asus R9 290x and i am so disappointed in everything,
First the second monitor preview is Flashing/blinking with “fast lights” in the video
I try’d options: turn on/off GPU acceleration of video-processing, Wait for V-Syn, Apply de-interlace filter,
Use GPU acceleration, it all help a bit but its still there,
it was even worse when in Catalyst the monitor was set to HDTV 1920×1080,
when i changed it to 1680×1050 it was again a bit better.
Thought it was something monitor refreshing but it is all set to 60mhz,
I have no idea what todo anymore.
(btw it’s not blinking/flashing in WMP/VLC so only in vegas pro 13)

Second and most likely the worst part is the timeline performance playback,
even the GTX 670 did a better job, its now lagging, stuttering, every few seconds
like it cannot keep up or something, with multiple layers i had problems before
but now it freezes and goes after a few seconds playing, missing parts of the lag.
again try’d above same settings but no effect.

    My rig:
    ASUS P9X79 Pro Model
    ASUS R9 290 X OC
    Intel Core i7 3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz
    32GB G.Skill Ripjaws Z 8×4 GB kit 1600
    CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W
    COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO

I really hope someone can help me and figure just out and not just wasted
350 euros, i hope it is clear all as my English is not perfect.

    Greetings from The Netherlands

Did you completely remove your NVIDIA drivers? I mean completely remove where you go back to the VGA drivers and start fresh. It could be something to do with having both drivers installed. Lot’s of people have reported great performance boosts with the R9 290x cards.

The proper procedure for removing video drivers is to:

    1. Uninstall the old drivers
    2. Remove any files from the file system because uninstall doesn’t always remove the files
    3. Open control panel and remove your display card from the device list
    4. Shutdown the computer and remove the old display card
    5. Install the new card and boot up the computer and install the new drivers

I realize you are past that now but going from NVIDIA drivers to AMD drivers might be the problem here.

    Hello John,

Thank you for your reply and i went today for a fresh install of windows as it made me crazy on work, well crazy, sad…
I contacted BruceUSA even via mail as i am clueles and thankly
he replyd and suggested what you said and a fresh install to
but no luck…below is my reply to him so i dont have to type evrything again and hope you or someone else can help me.

    “Hello Bruce,

First thank you for your reply, and i thought the same thing this morning already at work (keeps playing in your head), so i even went earlyer from work and did a fresh install and only the R9 290x GPU, and geuss what…

Same crazy things, i did almost the same as what you wrote (had to install quicktime etc. to)
When i turn on “wait for V-Sync” in VP13 the flickering/blinking with fast a movement video is almost gone on the external preview window/monitor, but now i have something new after selecting a few .mov files in vegas (explorer and turn on/off Auto preview play) VP13 on the first monitor flashes the whole screen like 5 times on both monitors (with external monitor on) or the external monitor freezes on a frame and then it is crashing time.

    Problem Description
    Application Name: Vegas Pro
    Application Version: Version 13.0 (Build 453) 64-bit
    Problem: Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
    Fault Module: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 13.0\Video Hardware Drivers\Monitor3D.dll
    Fault Address: 0x000007FEDEBB522C
    Fault Offset: 0x000000000000522C

So it have tobe the drivers and/or something todo with V-Sync (never knew about it untill now)
and the extended display setup i geuss…no idea nomore…

Below is a thread i sended on a forum so you can see my rig setup and more explained:

    https://www.moviestudiozen.com/forum/vegas-pro/543-vegas-pro-13-and-asus-r9-290x-alot-of-problems#2091

I have to admit that the timeline playback are is a bit better with .MOV files but almost the same as the GTX 670, so not good either, the other project was with a .mp4 file well that stutter/lag even more now then before the fresh install and again
even the GTX 670 played it ok.

No idea nomore really, a bit sad if i must be honoust..

    Greetings,
    Elvis”

    Help….

I posted this on the Sony forum, and have made other posts recommending a few things to check.

Verify your GPU is interfacing at 16X speed with GPU-z.

Check your systems DPC Latency with something like DPClat.exe, or Windows Performance Analyzer. You may have some onboard device or driver that is acting up.

Run a test with USB 3 Turbo mode off in BIOS.

Verify OpenCL operation is good with Luxmark v2.

Try some playback tests using XDCAM, HDCAM-sr-lite, or XAVC and see if the same problem occurs.

    Just some thoughts.

Use only GPU enabled effects and plugins.

    Hi Aaron,

Thank you for posting that and for your reply,

GPUZ says at Bus Interface: PCI-E 3.0×16 3.0.

You mean Performance monitor?! have high peaks till 90 when playing in Vegas Pro, and a small program i downloaded but that stayed in green, no idea what i am looking at…

I didnt see in my bios USB 3.0 Turbo mode, Asmedia i turned off
    and 3.0 usb, no differents.

LuxMark is working..i geuss…it did render some picture and then the result, but one good thing about what i noticed that in AMD CCC the Activity went all the way to 100% but when playing in vegas it does nothing sometimes it goed fast to 3% then to 0%, so that means vegas doesn’t use the GPU at all even its selected?!
in LuxMark also it says also Platform Version: OpenCL 1.2 ? shouldnt be this much higher ?

I dont have that kinda files/extensions, i only work with .mov and/or mp4.

And yes i read that about plugins, gonna do that for sure from now on, thank you

Yup, that’s not good. Vegas Pro doesn’t seem to be using your GPU which explains the horrible playback performance. I’m not sure why that would happen. Are you sure you have Options | Preferences | Video | GPU Acceleration turned ON? Perhaps you turned it off to test something else and left it off?

I thought so to, yes i am sure, i can do that blindly now sinds a few days 😉

Googled at work a lot again, power supply i read alot could be it
(did online some power supply consumption calculator tests)
but as i expected that won’t come above 620W,
i even doubled every choice, even i had crossfire and doubled all i would had a consumption of 780W, i have some youtube links ready for testing V-Sync and some utilities like vsynctester and radeon pro (for adaptive sync)
i feel and think its about FPS and Hz, in CCC there is only turn on/off V-Sync and triple buffering or something, NVIDIA have adaptive, think i miss/need that., one term i learned is “screen tearing “, read alot about it on R9 cards but on infinity modes and/or 4k monitors…

    Update:

It is worser then i thought, as i tested only WMP and Youtube
and no screen tearing and or blinking/flashing i prseumed it was only VG13..well…i tryd AE CC 2015, not with external monitor screen tearing (cant really test it as it works otherwise) but
same thing when selecting files (png/mov everything) both monitor flashes a few times…bizar….faulty card?

    I am playing around at:
    https://www.vsynctester.com/

This goes beserk to on both monitors, tryd radeonpro with
    adaptive vsymc..but no luck

If you haven’t already done so, I recommend asking this question on the Sony Vegas Pro forum as there are some very knowledgeable users on there who use the R9 290X and know how to set it up.

[Elvis Poldervaart] “same thing when selecting files (png/mov everything) both monitor flashes a few times…bizar….faulty card”

I’m beginning to think that. I’ve never heard of anyone having these problems with that card with Vegas Pro 13.0.

Yes gonna call the supllier later on, the screen tearing is solved, it
was indeed about VSync, when i do a fresh install of windows i always turn
of as much as posibble with “personalize”, Aero peak was off..strange or not
but some forums said that, turned it back on, and voila nomore screen tearing,
    long live windows..

So the flickering/strobing is still there in every program.
Have tobe to the card, googled so much last days…but this…speachless
Never AMD again thats for sure what i know, the Gsync and adaptive VSync
from NVIDIA i never had problems with i this amd’s Freesync
is only for like 15 specific monitors, RadeonPro have some FPS/Hz setting and
adaptive VSync, but it doesnt help all, i feel and the problem lays there…
