  • “Free” Windows 10 upgrade?

I just got a notification on my computer that I can reserve a free copy of Windows 10. Anyone know what the deal with this is, and whether I should even bother so that eventually I can have it if I ever decide to run it? I wouldn’t want to run it right away since I don’t want to mess with my installation of Windows 7, particularly since I don’t know much of anything about 10.

Win 10 is alot like win8 but the tiles are bigger and update in real time as well as adding the bottom task bar back. Search youtube for win 10. There’s alot of preview vids to check out. I don’t care for8 or 10 unless it’s on a tablet. My Surface Pro 3 has 8.1 on it, but I put classic shell on so it can look and act like win 7 but If I take off the keyboard the 8 UI is ok then.

The deal as I understand it, is that you can upgrade for free but like the OEM license it will be tied to that computer so you can’t install that license on another computer. Also, the free upgrade offer is only good for a year, after that it will be regular price to upgrade or buy.

I guess Microsoft is looking to push adoption of the new OS and there’s nothing quite like giving something away for free to get people to try it. 😉

I would just follow the link instructions and get the license. Back when MS was selling win8 for 20 bucks, I got licenses for all my machines for less than the cost of one full license now. Free optional upgrade is a pretty nice deal.

The latest win10 build 10159 is very stable, and a nice hybrid of Win7 UI and Win 8 under the hood.

You can go ahead and give it a whirl Angelo.
Nothing negative in my book, and i like the direction where they have
    taken Windows 10.

The “free” upgrade is only for Windows Home. If you want Windows Pro, that’ll cost’ya.

I’ve been using Windows 10 since October, over the Windows 7 I had (of course, I made a system copy of 7). This morning, I received build 10159. With each build, Windows 10 is more stable.

Many drivers for Windows 10 (sound cards, etc.) might not be available currently, but the most popular probably will be. Check with your manufacturer’s website.

If you haven’t participated in the beta testing program for Windows 10, you can still be involved which qualifies you for the free upgrade to a registered lifetime version of Windows 10.

Where did you get that from? It’s not what it says on the Microsoft Windows 10 FAQ page.

Correction. Window 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro = FREE upgrade
Same for Windows 8 Pro to Windows 10 = FREE upgrade

Chris, thanks for the heads up.

I guess I’m just curious if Windows 10 runs better. I don’t do much computing other than watching videos on the internet and editing.

The only versions that will not upgrade for free are Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Probably because those are already on volume licensing.

Microsoft has already said that any drivers written for Win 7 and Win 8 should work on Win 10. If you are using drivers written for Vista that happen to work in Win 7 or 8, you may be out of luck.

Gone is the ability to replace the CPU or motherboard and reinstall Windows. The license is now tied to the hardware. Change the Motherboard and you need to buy a new license.

I do believe that Microsoft is moving to a subscription model.
