This is why I’m glad I moved to the Mac.
OS X upgrades are free and I have Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 installed on both of my Mac Pro’s, my MacBook Pro, and my Mac Mini (that’s 4 computers) with one license (you can’t do that with Adobe!). I also have Apple’s office suite of Pages, Keynote, and Numbers on all 4 of my Macs with one license (you can’t do that with Microsoft Office!). No activation nonsense. No treating customers like criminals. I am so DONE with Microsoft and Windows it’s not funny.
[Stephen Mann] “I do believe that Microsoft is moving to a subscription model.”
Good luck with that. Not for me! Did I mention that Sony’s new Catalyst Suite runs on a Mac? (maybe it’s time to bail out on Microsoft) LOL ;-D

I have gone the same route as you did John and specifically for the same reasons you have pointed out! And I have no regrets! FCPX as made me discover the Mac OS back in 2011.
May I add that Microsoft also forced me to an upgrade from Win 8.0 to 8.1 upon a restart and while I was editing a project. I just couldn’t believe it that they took full control of my computer for this non requested upgrade which messed up several settings once installed and I needed to figure out before I could move on with my project.
And there are just to many updates that need you to restart and update your computer, why can’t it just shutdown and update?
Reinstalling a Mac OS is just fast and simple with the latest build available, and no need to reinstall your Microsoft Office Suite which will need numerous updates and a service pack or two or perhaps move you to a subscription plan. I now use Pages which is part of the Mac OS.
The only reason I still use the Windows environment is because I use Vegas now and then.
So no hurry in getting Windows 10 and I’d rather wait and see what free really means.

Same here. If it weren’t for Vegas Pro I would have no need for Windows.

Slide shows with my Ultimate S Pro Photo Montage tool. 😀
Seriously, I had a 500+ picture montage to do for a client and I tried to do it in FCP X but it wouldn’t even import the pictures in the order that I wanted. It insisted on bringing them in alphabetically. I wasn’t up to renaming 500+ images so I opened Vegas Pro and had them laid out exactly where I wanted them a matter of minutes with Ultimate S Pro.
I also use Vegas Pro for audio work but I’m learning Logic Pro X. FCP X has no concept of audio buses or a master bus so I find it very difficult to sum audio and control the overall loudness without those. Now, I’m no pro at FCP X. Quite to contrary, I’m just learning it, but I think a lot of FCP X editors export to ProTools or Logic Pro for audio work so I’m learning how to do that.
You have to understand that I still have a business built around Vegas Pro. I create plug-ins like Ultimate S Pro, ScatterShot 3D, Mayhem, the FasstApps, etc. and I create training episodes for Boris TV so I have to keep a working Vegas Pro environment for these activities. I would never have purchased Windows 8 if I didn’t have to test that my plug-is work with Windows 8. I will need to upgrade one of my systems to Windows 10 in order to test that my plug-ins work with Windows 10. But I still use Windows 7 when I have to work with Vegas Pro. I’m also still using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 for my plug-in development. That’s 4 versions behind the current version and I plan to continue to use it until it breaks because unlike Apple who gives away their development tools for free, Microsoft charges $1200 for them!!! i.e., I’ve got to sell a LOT of $9.95 FasstApp plug-ins just to break even so I don’t upgrade unless I have to. 😉

July 6, 2015 at 1:48 pmI’m definitely considering getting Premiere or FCP at some point, even if I continue using Vegas. Just the fact that I’m limited in jobs I can get with Vegas gets my interest in the other programs, but all these functionality issues with Vegas and Windows make me at least want to have an extra skill set with the other programs.

As good as you are with Vegas, I would never though you would switch to OSX. I have a Mac mini with the previous OS7 I believe with FCP7 I think the version is. You can tell I’m not a Mac person. I did try OSX witch is the first 64 bit OS made for Mac, again I think. I was working with a guy who had OSX with FCX. The owner of the company wanted a better editor so I tried working with them. Now that you’re working with that, Maybe you can explain why I had so many problems. He had Sony cameras, MTS files but once he imported them into FCX it converted everything to mov files. Before I started working with them, the boss asked if I could work with external hard drives used on a mac with OSX. I had since switched back to my earlier Mac setup with the older OS and FC. I connected some of my drives to my Mac mini 32bit and they mounted fine. When I connected his drives to my Windows machines, Windows would not see them. I believe his drives were formatted as Journaled. We tried copying a few mov files to a non journaled thumb drive and I could get the mov files but they barley worked with Vegas 10. I had to get his cameras and retrieve the original MTS files to get anywhere. Also OSX look way to much like Imovie plus Maverics wouldn’t run my older ver of Protools which is why I went back to OS7 with FC7. Have you used any edited files from OSX in Vegas? If so, how did they work? If I could get the files and drive to be friendly with Windows too, I’ll try it again. Now with audio, I’ve tried Logic, Cubase, Protools, Acid and Sonar. Sonar is by far my favorite audio nle. I comes with alot of good quality effects. I still have to use the 32 bit ver because I have sample tank with thousands of great samples and it won’t run on a 64 bit machine. FCX exports as OMF I think witch can be imported into Protools and Logic, witch both can run on OSX. Do you use Vegas with files from FCX? -

I can try 😉
[Danny Hays] “He had Sony cameras, MTS files but once he imported them into FCX it converted everything to mov files.”
That’s an option you can make. When you import into FCP X, you can leave the files in their native format or convert them to ProRes 422 MOV files. ProRes 422 is always going to perform better because it’s a digital intermediary and previous version of FCP only worked with ProRes so FCP editors prior to FCP X are use to converting everything to ProRes 422. If your camera shoots in a format that FCP X cannot edit natively then converting to ProRes 422 is your only option. So it depends on the format.
[Danny Hays] “Before I started working with them, the boss asked if I could work with external hard drives used on a mac with OSX. I had since switched back to my earlier Mac setup with the older OS and FC. I connected some of my drives to my Mac mini 32bit and they mounted fine. That’s correct. By default Mac uses the “Mac OS Extended (HFS+) Journaled” filesystem. This cannot be read on Windows without a 3rd party software. By contrast, Mac’s can read Windows NTFS volumes just fine so this is a Windows limitation.
[Danny Hays] “We tried copying a few mov files to a non journaled thumb drive and I could get the mov files but they barley worked with Vegas 10. I had to get his cameras and retrieve the original MTS files to get anywhere.”
I’ve said this a lot but I’ll say it again: You never want to ingest media on a Mac to edit on a PC or ingest media on a PC to edit on a Mac. Optimizing media for a system you are not going to use is a bad idea. You should always ingest on the platform you plan to edit on. Vegas Pro 10 did not do as well with Apple ProRes 422 files like Vegas Pro 13.0 does so this was probably a limitation of Vegas Pro 10 working with Apple ProRes 422 that Vegas Pro 13.0 no longer has.
[Danny Hays] “Also OSX look way to much like Imovie plus Maverics wouldn’t run my older ver of Protools which is why I went back to OS7 with FC7.”
I believe you mean that FCP X looked too much like iMovie and that was true for versions 10.0. FCP X 10.2 looks more like Vegas Pro now than iMovie.
[Danny Hays] “Have you used any edited files from OSX in Vegas? If so, how did they work? If I could get the files and drive to be friendly with Windows too, I’ll try it again.”
Yes, ProRes 422 files work fine in Vegas Pro. There are still limitations with working in 32-bit Windows QuickTime so you can’t use a lot of ProRes files but they do work. If you purchase Paragon HFS+ for Windows you can read and write Mac formatted drives in Windows just fine. I do this all the time from my Windows Bootcamp partition with my Mac drives.
[Danny Hays] “Now with audio, I’ve tried Logic, Cubase, Protools, Acid and Sonar. Sonar is by far my favorite audio nle. I comes with alot of good quality effects. I still have to use the 32 bit ver because I have sample tank with thousands of great samples and it won’t run on a 64 bit machine.”
It seems like you have a lot of old software. I use SampleTank 3 64-bit with Logic Pro X on Mac OS X without any problems. At some point you need to give up on your 32-bit plug-ins and purchase new 64-bit versions. 😉
[Danny Hays] “Do you use Vegas with files from FCX?”
No. So far I either select Vegas Pro or Final Cut Pro X for a project and do all of my editing in one or the other. I have exported some Sony MXF files from Vegas Pro that I’ve used in FCP X but normally I stick with one NLE.

July 7, 2015 at 2:42 pmDo you have a touch PC or computer?
If no, then it’s probably good for you.Since you are using win7 you wouldn’t have much of a difference with win10.
But with win8 and a non-touch computer people got fed up with wn8 cuz it is optimized more for touch so people didn’t like it much so they have fixed it with the win10 update.
Actually it is no much difference than win7
Just few differences so you will not find it tough.Give it a try friend!
