Nope that’s a myth. In fact, on the high end Mac’s are cheaper than PC’s. Read for yourself what Extreme Tech has to say about it:
Apples new $10,000 Mac Pro is $2000 cheaper than equivalent Windows PC
The new iMac 5K Retina cost less than an equivalent PC 5K display alone (without the computer!).
Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor – UP2715K $2499
iMac with Retina 5K display $2,299.00
Why would I buy a 5K display when I can have a 5K display with an iMac computer for less? In fact the new iMac 5K starts at $1999!
Mac’s are NOT more expensive. Apple just doesn’t make low-end cheap Mac’s but you get what you pay for. I wouldn’t buy a cheap low-end PC either.

July 7, 2015 at 6:52 pmJohn, I have no experience with Apple, and am open to Apple. However, may I please ask, is this really a fair comparison?
Is not a 4K Core i7 or Xeon SLI 4K system available for approximately the same numbers, with a +/- 27″ 4K monitor?
Just asking (in ignorance).

But the IMac is 5K not 4K. That means I can run Final Cut Pro X with a 4K PREVIEW WINDOW!!!! I’ve seen it. I’ve been to the Apple Store and run FCP X and had FULL RES 4K running buttery smooth in the preview of FCP X. No, this is not like a 4K system. In addition Apple hardware and software are fine tuned to work well with each other. So no one is wasting time on the Apple forums asking for the 1000th time “what graphics card should I use for best performance?”. You buy it and it just works!
I almost bought an iMac 5K instead of my Mac Pro but I don’t own any 4K cameras so I really don’t have a need for it right now.

PC sales have steadily declined year after year while Mac sale have actually increased for the same timeframe so Microsoft needed to do something to stop the bleeding. Giving away the upgrade to Windows 10 was a good move but when they started talking about Windows “as a service” it scared everyone. I’ve said this before, if PC software vendors all move to subscriptions and the OS itself is a subscription it will become unaffordable as a platform and just drive more people to Mac where you own the software that you purchase and it’s not locked to any particular hardware.
BTW, a company called Affinity has produced an outstanding competitor to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator that cost $49 each and they advertise that they will never require a subscription so companies are targeting those of us who aren’t buying the subscription model. I bought these immediately when I found out about them and they’re really full featured replacements. I have no need for any Adobe software anymore. All of it has been replaced with alternate products I can actually own and control the cost of ownership.

John, unless I’m missing something, that software, as great as it looks, is currently for the Mac only 🙁

July 13, 2015 at 8:18 pmJohn Rofrono [The new ver. looks more like vegas].
Now that’s very interesting. I will def. look into that, might have to try OSX with the new FCX again.
Also the Similar Photoshop and Illustrator sounds interesting.
IF Vegas or FCX could Key like I do using this Technic in After Effects, I’d be a happy camper.
To me the biggest downfall with Vegas is the included chromakeyer is a joke. I saw your tutorail on Boris keyer and it looks great, but with full length body shots including feet, shadows have to be there to some degree, IMHO.
https://youtu.be/0i9WsEQwDuwAngelo Mike , My surface Pro 3 came with Win 8.1 which I didn’t care for unless I remove the keyboard so I put Classic Shell on it for use with a keyboard. Check it out. It free too.

July 14, 2015 at 9:14 amActually the iMac 5k with i7,32GB ram, SSD, and M295 GPU is $4268.00 not including tax or anything else.
Not to sure the M290x is a good deal, that is a mobile chip, and it benchmarks 2.57 times slower than the actual r9 290x. So you would be basically having to do CPU only in Vegas with that rig.

Oh yea, well… that’s an advantage of moving to the Mac I guess. You get to run PC software and Mac software. I didn’t even realize it because I’m on a Mac now, but yea, it’s Mac only (sorry).
The point is that software developers are taking advantage of the fact that lots of us are never going to pay a subscription so where we might not have switched before, we have a reason to switch software now. Sorry they are not targeting Windows users.
