Was it an 8 year old that cracked it this time or is this still a teen phenomenon?

    Right tool for Right Job

AE is great in many ways, but what you are talking about here is more easily tackled with other tools. Such as Mirage 1.5 (bauhaussoftware.com) and ToonBoomStudio (ToonBoom.com). There are others as well that are dedicated to this type of animation.

Because this kind of workflow in those apps are what they do best… I’ve not attempted to force AE to accomplish this task in AE. Different apps and tools have different strengths.

I once viewed about 20% of TotalTraining.com’s After Effects DVD series. It was very well done up to the point I was in the process of moving and sold it on eBay. I was already up to speed on AE which is why I sold it. Had I been a beginner I think it would have been a great series to watch.

You might want to do a search under the creativecow.net after effects forum. I know this topic has come up dozens of times. But I use a totally different program to achieve stroke effects so I’ve never given it a whirl in AE.

Absolutely. I learned After Effects 6 before I ever bought Photoshop. But it would have helped a bit had I already had some understanding of photoshop skills. Did my lack of photoshop knowledge prevent me from learning after effects? Nope. Would it have helped? A bit perhaps.

And alpha channels are not as complicated as the name would suggest. Think of it as a channel that determines what stuff will show through below if you overlay it and mask something out. It determines what will be transparent and what is opaque.

The only ETA has been Adobe guiding during investor conference calls. For all of 2005 they’ve forcasted the video collection to release in the 4th quarter of ’05. I’m guessing that NABPOST in NY Nov 15-17th or early December at DVExpo West.

And Total Training is set to be attending DVExpo WEST, but I didn’t see them with a presence at NABPOST NY. So my guess is that Adobe might announce the apps at NABPOST. And I’m assuming that Total Training will have fresh video either ready or available for pre-order at DV Expo WEST.

Both these events are the final logical events of the year (Q4) to release the new Video Collection.

    I’m using a 19 month old Alienware m-51. 3.2 Ghz P4 w/HT, gig of Ram, 128mb nVidia card, 7200RPM 60 Gig HD. Works like a workstation.

I’m sure the new Alienware’s are even better. But this old crusty 19 month old dinosaur runs AE 6.5 Pro like a champ! So I’d imagine the new stuff out of Alienware will make AE scream.

October 22, 2005 at 9:56 am in reply to: Is there a new version of AE in the works?

Adobe’s been guiding the market for 8 months that AE7 and the Vid. Collection would be released in the fourth quarter ’05. However, this news is generally buried in their financial reports or discussed in investor conference calls.

I know it sounds crazy, but most public companies are more open about target release time frames with investors than they are with the creatives that use their products. Most of the release dates of many softwares are targeted (by quarter) in financial reports even when you can’t get an answer from a rep at a trade show or conference. Most reps have to play the “no comment” game. Meanwhile the CEO and execs are providing clearer guidance to wall street via their financial reports and conference calls.

Not all companies… but this does apply to a great number of publicly traded companies.
