February 4, 2006 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Question/Problem with 3d Grid/Video Wall tutorial by John FischerWhere did you first get the black screen? I ran thru the tut, and making the “Fractal Grid” comp, I could see something at every step. So where does yours go black, the mistake is probably at that point.
I didn’t know they had Fractal Noise back in AE5, but that was before I met AE.

February 4, 2006 at 6:28 pm in reply to: How to pass Video to flash? After Effects the best way? You’ll need Flash 8 (demo available).
Make the stage the size of your video. Open the Library and drag the FLV you imported onto the stage, when you publish you should have a swf that plays in the Flash 8 player.
This is off the top of my head as I haven’t used Flash in awhile. As I recall they have some basic tuts in Flash Help, or ask over at the Cow Flash Forum if this doesn’t work.

Take your video clip in AE and render it our with either Filmstrip (flm) or a
Ctrl M, then in the Render Queue, Output Module>Custom, then in the Output Module, In that top dropdown choose filmstrip (filmstrip is my fav, it’s all one file in PS, so apply the filter once and you’re done. If you want to vary the PS filter setting over the frames, you need to choose a Photo Sequence, like PNG sequence (this gives you a series of photos, one for each frames that you then can batch process in PS)(people like PNG because it supports transparency).
In that Video Output section, in Channels, be sure and select RGB + Alpha (that will give you Millions of Colors +, that + is necessary if you want transparency around an object) .Anyway hit render, then import your flm or Photosequence in PS, apply filter, then re-import into AE.
Note: You can save some time on the re-import by hitting the twirly (Main Render Queue again, then in Post-Render Action, choose Import and Replace Usage from the drop down.
Note: If you like that Render setting and you’ll use a lot, make a template out of it, from that first dropdown in the Render Queue, just below Custom choose Template, name it, and then you can choose it quickly later.
I apologize it this is too much detail.

Maybe I’m not understanding, but how about Time Warp in AE7? Demo version has it.

This is probably a crazy question, but is there a way to generate a “normal map” for a 2D object? Probably not I guess. I’ve got some 2D objects (like Dan’s “Animating A Walk Cycle” characters) that need shading, and I’ve used the RE:Shade/shape demo, it works OK until you get places like the Dragon’s legs (on the website above), RE just works off the alpha and the legs would blend into the body, becoming one big lump.
I guess I’m asking if I could somehow create a “Normal map” (Hey, colorama looks psychedelic too)for each of my 2D body parts.

OK, it’s a little easier to line up the grid of 10,000 (100×100) 1’s and 0’s, if you create a 10×10 Colored solid (I used blue). Move it below the Text layer, dup it. Change one position to 5,5 and the other to 995,995. Now you have a box in opposite corners of your 1000×1000 comp.
Like I said before, with Courier (T1), Medium at 1o pix font size, you need a leading of 10 and a tracking of 400 (I think I said 370 earlier, but 400 seems better). Anyway you can see when you get it aligned properly because there will be a number in the middle of the blue square on the upper left and the lower bottom. If they’re no aligned, change the leading/tracking until they do And you need to select the text layer when you make changes). Changing the font, means you need differnet leading and tracking to make things line up. Very doable, just takes a little tweaking. Hope this works for you.
Like I said before, this is a hack off Dan, and I can see a line that’s not necessary, the line that says:
if (c > 57) c += 7;There’s probably more that could be cleaned up, but this works.
I tried a different method of Dan’s, a hack of his grid comp that defined the Horz and Vert Space in his tut, “noise()
