    My esteemed friend Stefan Minning has just released his first plugin called Normality. It allows pseudo-3D image relighting based on normal maps. These normal maps can be created in almost every 3D program and I know that many of you use tools such as Lightwave and Cinema4D, so I thought you might be interested in it. Though obviously it won’t fix a bad render, it can help you adding some finesse to your stuff without always needing to re-render everything. Needless to say that it strengthens AE in the area of 3D integration. More advanced plugins for creating toon effects or using UV data from RPF files are in development (see [url]https://www.plausibleimpossible.de[/url]).

    wow that actually sounds very handy…and its realtively inexpensive in comparison to ANY AE PLUGINS.

    Looks awesome. Am I to understand that the plugin is also responsible for bringing a 3D object into the AE comp? or does a normals map simply appear to be 3D when loaded?

    Any idea on a timeline of when the anime/toon plugin is expected? That might prove to be very handy for me in a few months. i am going to start researching my options soon, I have to gather the technologies to easily create half-hour animated eps for show with an anime feel.

    The plug-in itself doesn’t help you obtain the normal-map from a 3D program. With the number of programs on the market today, that simply isn’t feasible.
    However, it’s quite easy to get the normal maps yourself. Many programs like Cinema 4D for example actually have features to export them, in others like Maya and 3ds max it’s just a matter of selected a normal map shader and hitting render.

    Then all you need to do is import in AE and your ready to light!

    This is probably a crazy question, but is there a way to generate a “normal map” for a 2D object? Probably not I guess. I’ve got some 2D objects (like Dan’s “Animating A Walk Cycle” characters) that need shading, and I’ve used the RE:Shade/shape demo, it works OK until you get places like the Dragon’s legs (on the website above), RE just works off the alpha and the legs would blend into the body, becoming one big lump.

    I guess I’m asking if I could somehow create a “Normal map” (Hey, colorama looks psychedelic too)for each of my 2D body parts.

    Normal maps are just RGB images where the three channels are used to store vector info of the surface normals (hence the name). The plugin itself doesn’t care how those maps were created, it will just look up the pixel values. So to some degree your idea might work by creating controlled shading using filters and then tinting it with Colorama. You shouldn’t expect miracles, though. The plugin won’t add a real 3rd dimension to your 2D footage, so it really comes down to how skillfully you can translate common realworld experience into the synthetic world. It will also be very difficult to control where the fake like hits. Since each of the specular/ diffuse shaded points is a result of combining all 3 channels, you will scratch your head more than once trying to figure out how to tweak the channels. I already thought about this myself and it might be helpful to create an expression driven template project for this of these days, but at the moment I simply don’t have the time. I wish you the best of luck with your experiments and let us know if you come up with something cool.
