I think Apple is still king for mobile editing. I would love some real competition here, but I’m not holding my breath.

Sure, I would prefer better-cooled laptops. Maybe not just for that 5% better render time, but especially for easier repairability and longevity. My first MacBook pro 15” died because of graphic card failure. On current pro 13” 2011 I had to change battery twice, trackpad, replaced faulty dvd drive with sdd, and charger also twice. I upgraded RAM and recently repasted a heatsink (wish I did this before). All this things are hard to do with new design. If Apple would give us 5-year warranty, let’s do it. Without it, it’s quite risky endeavour.

Non existing option for reference frame is now a problem. I help myself with skimming, although this is really just first aid.

Relatively easy modification for FCP UI designers (I guess) would be to put option for reference frame on the same drop down menu with scopes. In that way, you would choose scopes or reference frame. With practical shortcut, It would be satisfactory.

I also see more enhancements then obstacles regarding new workflow in FCPX. This kind of problems will get sorted out, some sooner some later. I just remember how long i waited for variable text size in bins in old FCP.

Metadata option is very powerful (in FCPX) and useful on a lot occasions, but in this kind of workflow is redundant for me. But yes, this is primarily question of style of film.

OK, we are closing the gap. Still feel that X way is most elegant.

On the other hand i’m breaking my hand just to put simple audio cross dissolve in X.

“APPLE ABANDONING PROFESSIONALS” also seems non-logical. For a company who really wanted to be a major at the end of the chain: selling content, it would be stupid to abandon a tool which is producing this content. But of course, it seems logical to do everything to widen or democratise this production chain.

Proprietary codecs with few users are a real risk.

Yes, this is reality – painful.

Wouldn’t be nice if Apple would “open” prores for everyone, like Google did with WebM?

Probably not clear enough: we are archiving footage without transcoding. Problem is with digital masters. With ProRess you are basically bound with apple – and sometimes this could be dangerous.

I think nobody yet pointed on similarities with Sony Vegas (SV). When I first saw SV (it was not Sony yet) I was pleasantly surprised and you had to admit that basically all other editing programs at that time where from other age. Of course, SV was not broadcast ready, but was surprisingly quick, intuitive, even more powerful on some parts. But it also had some immanent problems, mainly lack of good overview, to much mouse driven and to much “fluidity”.

There is a lot signs that Apple is not abandoning pro users, but programs are and should evolving. There will also be some mistakes, wrong taken paths, but together we will correct them. I think price will allow slow transition.

If you are concerned with formats, or more precise universal readability, I would suggest just linux and TAR in POSIX flavor. We went this route with Quantum and their bundled SAS controller.

But it takes a little typing in terminal, so not so elegant.
