Now you can maybe get false impression that FCPX gained a lot for free-form editing (trailers, spots) and others loose. Let me just mention one neat feature for very linear workflow.

In editing observational style documentary I think is often to use subtractive type of editing, e.g. putting 1h of footage in chronological order on the timeline and then deleting, trimming etc. FCPX put automatically in/out point on the beginning/end clip when you put in/out mark somewhere in the clip. Its not big deal that you gain speed or time (1 click vs. 3-4 clicks), but – for me at least – I feel I can be more focused.

Its rather small, but potentially very useful feature.

It isn’t 3-4 clicks. It is exactly 2 keystrokes in FCP7: X then O to ripple head, X then I to ripple tail.

Ah, you are right, but its still one more.

Try Option-right/left bracket key for easy trimming of in/out pouts: just one keystrokeke (with the option key) will trim to your cursor position.

OK, we are closing the gap. Still feel that X way is most elegant.

On the other hand i’m breaking my hand just to put simple audio cross dissolve in X.

[Miha Pece] “i’m breaking my hand just to put simple audio cross dissolve in X.”

I agree this needs to be addressed. A simple right click on a transition and select either video, audio or both might be a solution to crossfade audio contained with the video.

    Best,

tap out the cuts with ctrl B and then shuttle through and trim head or trim tail to get what you need, problem with this workflow is its dumb as theres no metadata you can add once clips in timeline

Metadata option is very powerful (in FCPX) and useful on a lot occasions, but in this kind of workflow is redundant for me. But yes, this is primarily question of style of film.

This is a function I use in avid all of the time ( top and tail matched to the keyboard from the command palate)

You can rough cut a sequence then quickly move along the timeline removing the top or end of the shot. ( equivalent to mark clip , re-mark in/out, delete)

Glad to see something useful has come to FCP 😉
