It turns out “auto-balance” is not always what you want. Sometimes you want to correct one clip by eye relative to another clip. It doesn’t look like FCP X supports any easy way to display a reference image while adjusting the color correction settings on a clip. That makes it nearly impossible to get the adjustment you want. Am I missing something? Any thoughts on a workaround aside from taking a screenshot (ewwwwwww)? This was pretty straightforward in FCP7.

Very good point. Another proof, that they don’t talk to the pros before laying down the fundament of this App.

Are you talking about using a Davinci style frame grab where you display a wipe of another frame?

I’m going to think about how to accomplish that.

You can copy the last shot to the next shot and so forth, but I think you are talking about a reference frame?

Some one might post a tutorial on that before the day is done.

There is a very simple workaround for what you are trying to achieve if you don’t want to simply copy the correction from one clip to the one you are trying to match.

( cmd+alt +c to copy effects on one clip – cmd+alt+v to paste onto another clip )

As to visually matching. Sure you are not going to get a nice big image in your non existent preview monitor.

What you can do however is file copy (cmd+c+v) the clip you are using as a reference. Then place it above the clip you want to correct. Using the crop tool select how much of the clip you want to see as a reference. Select the bottom clip and you can then colour correct visually.

Thanks for your suggestion. Am I the only one getting tired over all these workarounds?

    You are not alone.

It’s a new way of working for sure and I am finding, things end up being much quicker when looked at in real time and in a start to finsh kind of way.

Small kinks can be worked out.

It would be nice if they could use the MATCH TO clip function in the regular CC when you just want to see a reference image. Or just a one button click that opens a one time small reference pop out window you can drag near the image you are working on.

Or a COLOR ROOM window layout would be good for those of us who like to do all of the color work AFTER the edting and not on-the-fly.

Sorry but I’m really enjoying learning how to do things in FCP X.

My interest in the software grows day by day. Sure it’s got severe limitations but is also very forgiving when trying out new ideas.

The biggest fault for me, as you pointed out, is the lack of external monitoring.

The most exciting thing for me is creating graphic components in Motion and publishing them back to FCP X. So a lot of the jobs I used to do through stacking clips in FCP7 I’m now learning to do in Motion.

However it’s a shame that there is no send to Motion facility as there is in FCP7.

Be interesting to see what issues are resolved through Lion and the next Vers whenever that will be published.

Yes. or an “EXPORT TIMLINE CLIP” to MOTION dialog box that would offer the option to add handles to the exported shot.

It seems like a natural with the compound clip structure.

It’s version 1 software, keep feeding back ideas and hopefully some of them will get integrated. I’m enjoying the frontier spirit on this forum!

Non existing option for reference frame is now a problem. I help myself with skimming, although this is really just first aid.

Relatively easy modification for FCP UI designers (I guess) would be to put option for reference frame on the same drop down menu with scopes. In that way, you would choose scopes or reference frame. With practical shortcut, It would be satisfactory.

I also see more enhancements then obstacles regarding new workflow in FCPX. This kind of problems will get sorted out, some sooner some later. I just remember how long i waited for variable text size in bins in old FCP.
