Yes-please what is silver level at Discovery?

As well, our show will probably end up on Speed Channel. They were good with the HVX200 but now are mum about the PMX-EX1.

The other producer on this is worried that the PMX-EX1 or any other XD cam for that matter won’t meet QC at Speed since the format it is 35mb vs the 100mb you find in the Panasonic P2 line.

  • Hi Christian,

Oh boy two of my most dreaded problems, IMOVIE and Subclips in FCP. Yikes almighty. IMOVIE strips the timecode of the clips and makes it like editing machine to machine on VHS in control track.

I have never found a work around this problem except for to sit down with a piece of paper and do the math. Figure out the in frame of the clip in IMOVIE. Go to your good clip in FCP, match the frame by eye and then figure out the length of the shot in IMOVIE and put it the good clip in your FCP timeline.

I am creating visual effects and color correcting a project that was captured in FCP via P2 in HD and then the editor thought it would be grand to bring all of that in IMOVIE and edit it there. I had to re-create the edit by hand, meaning look for the P2 file numbers, then look at the IMOVIE cut and figure out where it went in the edit back in FCP.

If this is not your personal project, I would tell the client that it is going to cost more for you do it. That is what I just did. It took me two days to fix mine, it was 30 minutes long.

September 7, 2007 at 12:26 pm in reply to: Batch capture problem!

    Hi,

I have all but given up on the batch capture and media manager of FCP. I have never been able to get it to on-line a project properly.

My old school Media 100 from 10 years ago handled batch re-capture perfectly and FCP is like going backwards when it comes to this.

Quick thought-did someone copy and rename clips or create subclips of what you are trying to batch capture? That will cause horrible problems and it FCP does not know what to do with subclips.

I have had to on-line big projects with the problem by hand, clip by clip. Meaning putting in the timecode in and out by hand for each shot. Totally sucks.

On a side note-Apple should get rid of the subclip feature all together. It just causes problems.

    Bob,

I know what you mean about the media being referred to in the Trash. If I get confused about what I put in the trash or not, I try to empty the trash with FCP open. If it is referring to what’s in the Trash, it won’t let you empty it and it will tell you what files it is referring to.

Then you can look in the Trash to see what is in there or not.

Also I find that by naming things really well when I digitize or bring in from a P2 card helps to juggle projects,. I don’t name things Cam 1 tape 1, I name them “Red Ball Cam 1 Tape 1.” That way if stuff gets weird, like employees who don’t listen to the rule “ALWAYS SET YOUR CAPTURE SCRATCH EVERYTIME YOU OPEN FCP” then it is easier to do a search and find stuff.

The projects have been shoot in 24p HD using the HVX200. We use the DVCPROHD 720/24p easy setup while in FCP. We have no issues in FCP and the stuff looks great on our HD monitor and on a downcovert through our Black Magic Card to a SD monitor.

The trouble lies in creating a SD DVD. We usually export by reference rather than self-contained because by reference is referring to the original files and I just have done it that way since NLE’s were born.

I will try a test running it through compressor first, it just sucks because it used to work a few months ago before we did a software upgrade to FCP 5.1.4 and whatever version DVD Studio Pro is that goes with that.

Thanks for the fast reply Charlie. Yeah I have never used compressor for encoding for DVDs, I always used to let DVD Studio Pro do it.

I will have to play around and see if that will work since we are changing the size on the encode from HD 1280 x 720 to SD 720 x 486 letterbox.

Did you by chance make subclips while editing this project? If you did then media manager and batch capture will not work, it will try to digitize the entire media.
