    Hi there,

I’m still in the process of figuring out every ramifications of this problem but, if by any chance you have encountered something similar, please help!

So, I’m doing an online for a very large project containing various formats (HDCAM SR, HDCAM, BETACAM SP, HDV, XDCAM HD, etc.)

I have received a media manager file from FCP 5.

My system is FCP 6 running on 2X 3ghz quad core w/ 4g ram connected to a 10 TB HD via fiberchannel.

I batch capture my clips per tape, as for any project. But if I select lets say 5 clips, the capture window tells me FCP captures 9 or sometimes 10 clips. Indeed, as the batch capture happen, FCP capture most of the time TWICE the SAME clip. The media it generates are TWO IDENTICAL FILES (identical in size but FCP renames them) in my finder. Only one of these medias refer to a clip in the browser…

Now that’s fine, I can live with double the time, double the space if that’s the only problem..

    but!

On the timeline, while all my clips are digitized, I still have offline clips (in white) that refer to a clip in the browser (using shift+F) that IS ONLINE!

    This is crazy no?

    Please help if you can!

    Thanks!

    Etienne

    Hi,

I have all but given up on the batch capture and media manager of FCP. I have never been able to get it to on-line a project properly.

My old school Media 100 from 10 years ago handled batch re-capture perfectly and FCP is like going backwards when it comes to this.

Quick thought-did someone copy and rename clips or create subclips of what you are trying to batch capture? That will cause horrible problems and it FCP does not know what to do with subclips.

I have had to on-line big projects with the problem by hand, clip by clip. Meaning putting in the timecode in and out by hand for each shot. Totally sucks.

On a side note-Apple should get rid of the subclip feature all together. It just causes problems.

I media manage and re-digitize all the time from projects (and edls) that weren’t mine during in the offline edit, some people even do the media manage for me (i guess they think they are doing me a favor… but they somehow usually screw something up). Sometimes these projects que up the most bizarre clip durations that don’t make any sense. I have also experienced that reloading of the same clip twice, tho it was some weeks ago and i don’t exactly remember the outcome… My most frequent error when loading, is that FCP is not able to link the captured clip to the clip as it is used in a sequence. I have yet to bother and try to figure out why the hell the project is commanding FCP to not work correctly, because the following usually gets it all working (and this may have corrected the repetitive loading issue as well):

Export an edl of the offline sequence and import that back in, and/or you also can do another media manage to that sequence (setting it to delete unused media, etc). These two these two things seem to always do the trick in my experiences…

Hey thanks a lot for the input…

Like you Alex I am not bothering myself anymore about WHAT was the cause of this problem. All these clip synch problems and duplicate capture and weird stuff didnt happen anymore when I created a new media manager. I’m just SOOO glad it worked out.

The offline project was edited on FCP5 (and media manager also originated from v5) and we’re doing the online on v6. I’m guessing that transition has a lot to do with these problems.

    thanks again!!
