That’s Captain Disillusion! He has a great YouTube channel full of videos. He’s basically pretending to be some children’s tv show character from back in the day, but instead of teaching them about shapes and being nice to one another, he debunks videos and does some basic VFX demos. He’s hilarious.
And, yes, in this video, he is doing an impression of Andrew Kramer. The fact that it’s linked on the Video Copilot website adds to the hilarity.

You can use bevel effects to make something look 3d.
If you want to do this in actual 3d, don’t forget that Cinema 4D Lite comes with After Effects. It’s a stripped down version of the full 3d software Cinema 4D. The “Lite” version includes metaballs which do this exact sort of thing.

You might consider using CC Sphere instead, but I’m having trouble picturing what you’re trying to do.

This is very likely not an issue with After Effects, but more to do with other software that’s running on your machine. I’ve seen people with odd issues like you’re describing who are running password locker apps like LastPass.
What, exact, version number of AE are you running?
Also, what plugins and scripts have you installed?

I mean, random jittery motion might work, but it shouldn’t be hard to just keyframe it.
Can we see this logo so we can get some better ideas? I mean, basically just move the anchor point to where it should be rotating from and keyframe the rotation a lot.

Oh! That’s just because you don’t have a lot of RAM in your system.
If you want to see a longer preview, lower the resolution of your comp to half, or lower. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t need to preview your whole comp at full res. Get the look and feel in a few small areas at full-res, but use lower resolutions while you’re working on the animation, etc.
