Also, you should seriously consider updating. You are using the buggiest version of After Effects I can recall using. If you can’t upgrade to the latest versions 15 or 16 (commonly called CC 2018 and CC 2019), I’d recommend at least updating to version 13.7.x (I can’t remember what the latest number was – at least 13.7.1). They fixed a huge amount of bugs that were introduced in 13.5.

Without knowing what your render settings are, it’s really hard for anyone to give much in the way of an answer.

  • Depending on your project, it might be best to edit first in Premiere Pro (Premiere also has a pretty good keyer) and then bring your edit into AE if you need to do more involved compositing. Then you’ll know what resolution you need things to be at and exactly what parts of each clips you need to worry about.

These days, you get a lot more bang for your buck with PC vs. Mac. I’ve been using both for my whole career, but I would never purchase a Mac right now for what I do. I just can’t justify the cost.

Puget Systems have some great resources on their website with testing results on what’s best for After Effects, but if you want a more easily digestible resource, you’re in luck! This just came out: https://www.schoolofmotion.com/tutorials/after-effects-computer?ref_id=ae-comp-em

Try saving your titles from Premiere Pro as PNGs and then animate them in AE.

  • The size won’t be as uniform if you add some randomness to the life of the particles. Since the life is different for each particle, the sizes will appear at different positions. Also, more randomness in their velocity will also help.

[Nicolas Guionnet] “Well I made my choice for the moment and will use Classic 3D for the sake of DOF (in a couple of clicks). There may be a way to approach the effect of extruded shapes …”

You can stack a bunch of copies of your layer in 3d space slightly offset on the z-axis and it’s a pretty decent fake 3d.

If you can’t re-shoot it, the first technique I would try is to use Photoshop’s Content Aware Fill to make a wartless finger. Then grab a patch from that repaired finger and track it to the hand using Mocha AE.

But seriously try to reshoot it first as Dave says.

March 12, 2019 at 7:11 pm in reply to: Flood Waters Rising

When you say “rushing in”, could you describe it a bit more? Is there something else on the screen already that needs to look like it’s flooded? Or do you just want to have water level rising on the screen?
If you need a room or something look like it’s flooding, this tutorial might help get you heading in the right direction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAX-iLOOx8c
Action VFX has some splashes that might help sell it if there are things the water needs to interact with.

If you just need water that rises until the camera is underwater, the (very old) Psunami plugin (available from Red Giant) might be the tool for you. It even lets you put the camera under water. (The camera is not controlled by the AE camera, annoyingly, but there is a way to tie it to AE’s camera with expressions, if need be.)
