Have you added any third party plugins, extensions, or scripts? Have you changed your layouts at all?
Highly recommend installing the newest version. It can be installed alongside your current version without interfering with it (so you can go back if you must). There have been many bug fixes between your version and what’s current.

My guess is that it has something to do with the layer being scaled (maybe with CR on?).

You can put more than one effect on an image. So, if you get your particles moving away, you can then use Bezier Warp, Mesh Warp, Liquify, or any other distortion effect on top of it to change their shape/path.

Does it stop working entirely or is it just that the icon is missing? (Looks like Trigger Action is missing its icon too.)
I’d suggest uninstalling and reinstalling it.

In that case, you would want to move the Turbulence field and not have the particles have any motion at all.
Actually, if you don’t want the particles to move, you should probably be using Form instead of Particular.

Look into any tutorial for morphing shapes in AE. There are a bunch.
Then, posterize time.
Then add glow. (Preferably a chromatic glow which is easy with Optical Glow from Red Giant, but you can achieve yourself with stacking glow effects with different colors and glow sizes/amounts.)

You can make your emitter move to the beat of the song and have wind moving the particles along or you can have the turbulence field strength match the beat of the song.

Any chance you have Red Giant’s Trapcode Suite? Particular can do this really easily. I don’t think you can do what you’re asking for with CC Particle World.

Note that you can have different settings for different key commands for previewing.
For example, I have it set up to where pressing 0 on my number pad initiates a preview from the beginning of the work area, but pressing spacebar initiates a preview from where the Current Time Indicator is.
Note also, that you can have different behaviors when you press the key commands to stop a preview too. For example, I have it set up to where pressing 0 on the number pad while a preview is caching will stop it from caching and start playing back the cached frames then pressing numpad 0 again will make it go back to where the CTI was originally. Whereas pressing spacebar will just stop the preview and move the CTI to where it was playing/caching.
You can customize the CRAP out of your previews in AE and it’s wonderful.
