  • Can I move a set number of particles from one shape/location to another?

Hello, new-ish to AE and very ignorant. I would like to do an effect where a person’s shape is broken down into flakes of light and all of those particles are sucked into the nearby shape of a small, flat rectangle like a vacuum sucking up a bunch of dust (also need to do the same effect in reverse in other shots). I can figure out much of how to achieve this my but I can’t seem to find any particular (hah) instruction that explains how to start with one shape made of a set number of particles and moves them all to another shape. Morphing won’t do it, just using a path won’t do it either. Is this possible with Particular?

Not really with particular. If it’s doable with actual layers (ie. not thousands of particles) you could look into Pastiche, combined with maybe wiggling the positions of the layers a bit.

And I’m sure StarDust might be able to do it, that’s a super complex modular particle system that offers a lot more finegrained control than Particular, but I have no experience with it personally.

You could always Pre-Comp your effect and reverse it?

You can put more than one effect on an image. So, if you get your particles moving away, you can then use Bezier Warp, Mesh Warp, Liquify, or any other distortion effect on top of it to change their shape/path.
