Moire is a result from when the when high frequency detail is close to the resolution of the camera or display. And as others have pointed out compression can also cause problems as well.
There is a scene in an episode of The Crown (one with fine tweed) which exhibited Moire when I watch via an Apple TV. I checked with a friend who worked on it and he said it was clear on his monitor during post – but then he was watching on a top end Sony 4K monitor from the RAW files ☺

So the plot thickens..
I trashed the prefs and created a new Library, importing the files directly into it.
Now when I press play I see the image but if I pause it, or add an effect it goes black.
The really bizarre think is that if I create optimised media I just get a green screen. Will have to send a bug report to Apple I think..

Hey Jeremy,
I have tried that but it doesn’t seem to want to know – hence the question could there be an issue with my system, possibly various older codecs?
I have installed the Sony SR codec and removed the Sony MXF import plugin which has made no difference.
As I said I can see the files in the FCP X browser but can only see thumbnails.
Any ideas?

Thanks Noah and Jeff.
I had a feeling that would be the case!
Oh well – I’ll have to think of a new plan.

Quick update:
Premier Pro and Pro player both see the files as 50P.. So its the files not the software.

I can import Sony A7s XAVC files directly into FCP X without any problems.
Currently running FCP X 10.2.2 on a 2012 MBP with El Cap.

Jeremy. Thank you so much for the perseverance.
So here’s what happened. In that directory that is is Wrest Park (below the 2013 directories), there are two other directors “Wrest Park 4” and “Wrest Park 5” i.e. cards 4 and 5. These were shot about 4 months after the first batch of cards.
I added all five directories to the side bar as you suggested, with the clips in two separate events “Day 1” and “Day 2”. If I go to the Day 1 event the “reimport” option is greyed out. In the Day 2 event its not and all the clips have relinked successfully. Yeh!
In day two the clips all have “Canon XF” in the camera name but in the Day 1 clips, the camera name is the folder number.
If I drag the clips from Day 1 into day 2 it still won’t let me relink those files. So there must be an problem with those directories I would guess.
Thanks so much for all that help.
