First how were the files brought into FCP 4.5. How was the footage shoot on the HVX, you should not be guess at the settings, like Jerry said the clip and timeline settings need to be an exact match.

Subclip in for FCP only just pointers if it is really a long clip export it as a self-contained and bring that into FCP and then Send to Motion. You have to do the same thing if you use smooth cam also. Not the cleanest way to get something done but the result is worth it.

The norm for me is to set up the timeline for the majority of the clips. That is the easy answer. FCP6 makes it a little easier by being able to playback multiple formats on a timeline. But If at all possible it best to try to capture everything to the same format by cross, up and/or down converting.
Other factors are what system are you using, what HD space and speed do you have. How much footage will you have, is it minutes, hours?

If all the setting are correct on the camera you should be fine. The varicam captured over firewire will remove the duplicate frames and the material should be 23.98, which is what 24pN on the HVX is. No panasonic tape can record true 24P so it puts it into 30P, the nice thing is there is not interlacing so it is super clean removal of the duplicate frames. I have mixed the two several times but someone else set up the cameras but the right way is also the normal. Once captured and transfered the FCP will not know the difference between the clips.

One of the major features of FCP6 is the auto setting of the first clip you drop into a sequence. If they don’t match it will ask you if you want to change the timeline to match the clip. I love this feature! It will also playback mixed formats in the same sequence but enventually you will need to render.
One thing that was not answered is what formats are you downloading. If it is something like mpg or h264 they have to be rendered to an editing format.

If you have FCS2 the new motion has an unbelievable slo-mo (it now has the Shake engine). So I send the clip to Motion and slow it down. An unbelievable difference.
Slo-mo within FCP is not one of its strong suits.

In FCP there is a Remove … command for clips already ingested.

The varizoom can be purchased either way
VZ-PFI Focus/Iris on one and Rock-DVX (works for HVX also) Zoom/Rec on the other
Or all together Rock-PZFI.
I have both sets for different set ups the two controllers for sticks and the all in one for jib.
