If you want to use compressor to do this you change the Frame rate under Encoder>Video Settings> Frame Rate: (Custom) 23.98 (make sure Interlaced is not checked. Use the same Compressor Type as your timeline.
Then if you want to do some test to see if Frame Controls give you better results you can try, if you use best settings get ready to wait. So do test on really short clips. But in the end your duration is the same as the 29.97.
There are programs and filters that do a really good job
Natress, Magic Bullet and Shake if you want better results.

First, you really need to update your version of FCP, 5.1.2 is where P2 became stable. FCP 6 takes it a bit further. But yes can do different version of the same clip just like you can do with a tape. Just about anything you can do in FCP’s capture you can do in Log and Transfer (what it is called now.
The recommended work flow is to always copy your P2 entire folder structure to a hard drive (this is your raw “tapes”) then do the capture.

If this was your camera settings then you to not have an “advanced pulldown” cadence. You need to either capture and edit 29.98 or shoot in 24pA and then capture as above.

The other two tools available with FCP are”Remove Advanced Pulldown” but I think that only works on DV25/50 footage captured at 24pA.
The other is Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine. If this doesn’t work within FCP try using the stand alone program.

That is kind of like asking how long a car will run. Cameras are not made to capture with, that is not saying that you cannot do it, just that the transport systems are not a beefy as decks. It is never recommend to you our production camera as a deck but people do it all the time. There is no way to give a firm answer, just a warning.

Are you asking, can connecting a cable damage a camera or make it act weird? I know Panasonic states you are to plug in the cable to the camera first and then to the computer/firestore and then turning the camera on. Any time is power involved a problem can happen. -
Foiled again Batman, I already ordered my copy from Apple, first the iPhone now this. The one thing that eases my pain is I always forget to mail in those rebates anyway. 🙂

We used cheap canon miniDV cameras as decks for years. They make great portable decks also. Just about any camera with firewire should work for capture so you may want to look at the camera side to make sure that meets your needs. Personally I like canon and panasonics over sony for the value, you seem to get more for your money, or even cheaper lower end models.
The only less than perfect side of using the camera as a deck is it is really slow in reacting when controlling it within FCP, but it is not too bad.

Unless you have the wrong camera listed the Sony F900 is a HDCAM camera so you need an HDCAM deck.
That being said the DVCProHD offers a good compromise for image quality and storage space and speed. A lot of bang for the bucks. Of course you do take a quality hit but there are those of us out there that accept it and it reduces the budget rather nicely also. The other option to go up a in quality but still be within your system is to use ProRes but you would have to find a IoHD to rent (or a Mac Pro just for capture)
SDI has no TC but all decks at this level have RS422 to control the deck and feel in the TC.
