Inexpensive but decent DV camera
Rather than outfit my son with a miniDV deck for the system I plan to give him, a dual 500 MHz Power PC G4 running FCP 4.5 on a 10.3.9 platform, I am considering buying him an inexpensive yet decent consumer miniDV as both an input source and a second camera for his student projects.
Any suggestions out there on makes and models? -

We used cheap canon miniDV cameras as decks for years. They make great portable decks also. Just about any camera with firewire should work for capture so you may want to look at the camera side to make sure that meets your needs. Personally I like canon and panasonics over sony for the value, you seem to get more for your money, or even cheaper lower end models.
The only less than perfect side of using the camera as a deck is it is really slow in reacting when controlling it within FCP, but it is not too bad.

There are several 3CCD models.
They are not great in low light, but when you have better lighting or are outdoors, the images rival pro camcorders.
