There are also keyboards and key replacement sets that have all the basic shortcuts on them. Great way to learn as you go.
Bella and Logic are two companies that I know of. I like and have the Logic one.

Are you sure that the footage was not shot as letterboxed, that is one possible setting.

For some reason everyone has to buy some cheap equipment before they buy the “right” stuff, monitors and tripods are the prime examples of this. with the relative cheap cameras like the HVX selling for around $5K it is hard for some people to spend $2-3K on a monitor and tripod.

While I don’t think it is a good move on Apples part I would read too much into it, major FCS releases seem to be an every other NAB.

None of your listed monitors are pixel for pixel. You have to go up to 17″ to get that in 720p and 23″ for 1080. (There maybe something smaller out there but it is going to be pricely)
While I agree that the better the monitor more it will aid you in production and it is best to get the most you can afford, and you need to make an effort to afford a good monitor.
Practicing and getting to know your camera and monitor is even more important. By doing this you can get by with a less expensive monitor (not saying you should) But lets face it not everyone can buy a $1500 and up monitor.
Personally I would at least start with a monitor that accepts HD component signal, While it is not pretty it does aid with framing and focus if you are on a tripod.

Most hollywood titles are 24P DVDs, the DVD player adds the pulldown when it is hooked up to a TV that does not handle progressive frames.
Go with 24pN.

There are no portable HD DVD players out there, they are SD.
If you don’t have the money for an HD monitor there are some under a grand (800×480) than Varizoom has a SD 7″ for around $400.
You can hook up some portable DVD players through composite connector.

Can you be more specific what the problem is.
Your are not removing any pull down.
SInce you are shooting 30P did you change the field dominance to none for the sequence?
Also are you looking at the video with an external monitor, if not you are only looking at a proxy of the image. When you bring the footage onto a timeline is it a color at top, if yes your clips and seq settings do not match.

If you can rent a DigiBeta why not capture from that, if it is a deck issue definitely use the SP over the DV tape.

But you really need to be viewing the footage on an external monitor.
DF and NDF is not really important with regards to playback quality, it is got how the numbering goes. What is important is that your sequence matches the codec and framerate of your clips. FCP6 best new feature (IMO) is that it will conform to the first clip you drop on it. In FCP if you scroll the Browser columns you will find on the info you need to make sure playback is setup correctly. Frame size/Vid Rate/Compressor are you main concern and the sequence needs to match.
If you drop a clip on the timeline and you get a red or any color bar something is wrong and it will effect your playback quality. Also check your RT setting in the drop down button – top left of the timeline, if playback is set to medium or low it could give you this problem also.
