  • Problem importing HVX 200 footage in FCP

Posted by Monica F.p.williams on February 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm

I’m importing footage shot in standard definition on an HVX 200 and am having problems with jaggies. The footage was shot at 30p with 6db of gain. DF The jaggies do not show up when fed through a monitor directly from the camera, but when importing through Final Cut Pro, it is really noticeable.
any one with the same problem? I tried setting ntsc dv 29.97 and ntsc 30 frames

are you view the video on an external monitor or just the viewer or canvas. If so set them to 100% and the jaggies should do away. anything other than 100% is a proxy, If this show your footage is okay you can do back to fit in window with confidence.

    Hi Michael
first of all thanks for you answering so quickly
I did that but the jaggies are still there, If I see the footage from the camera hooked directly to a monitor looks ok, but when I try to load it in FCP I can’t find the right codec .The DP told me that he shot 30P DF or 60i (?) but DF should be 29.97 so I am totally confused.

But you really need to be viewing the footage on an external monitor.

DF and NDF is not really important with regards to playback quality, it is got how the numbering goes. What is important is that your sequence matches the codec and framerate of your clips. FCP6 best new feature (IMO) is that it will conform to the first clip you drop on it. In FCP if you scroll the Browser columns you will find on the info you need to make sure playback is setup correctly. Frame size/Vid Rate/Compressor are you main concern and the sequence needs to match.

If you drop a clip on the timeline and you get a red or any color bar something is wrong and it will effect your playback quality. Also check your RT setting in the drop down button – top left of the timeline, if playback is set to medium or low it could give you this problem also.

Thank you Michael but I did all you suggested already and still looks bad , any other project I open being in HD, Digibeta or Dv look good I am having this problem only this time.
I also looked at the recommended Easy setups and that is what I used to import the footage.
    480i 60/480p 30 DV-NTSC or DV50-NTSC (tried both)

Thank you again for your help,I’ll think of something tomorrow.
    I’ll post if I find a solution.
    Ciao

Monica- not sure you’re listening here. What you see in FCP is always going to look worse than on a monitor because it’s an RGB proxy version of your footage. The ‘jaggies’ you’re talking about have nothing to do with the actual image quality of your footage. It’s just a low resolution preview version you’re looking at in FCP.
