HVX-200 field monitor solution
Posted by Arturo Marroquin on February 8, 2008 at 11:41 pmhey guys,
Is there a low budget solution to an HD field monitor? I will be shooting a doc with an HVX-200 and a glidecam system, the only thing is that a 7″ monitor is way beyond my budget. Any suggestions as to how I can monitor the HD signal without the expense? I read somewhere that it’s possible to use a monitor from a portable HD DVD player–which sounds crazy but, is it possible? Thanks.
best,

There are no portable HD DVD players out there, they are SD.
If you don’t have the money for an HD monitor there are some under a grand (800×480) than Varizoom has a SD 7″ for around $400.
You can hook up some portable DVD players through composite connector.

February 10, 2008 at 6:19 pmJust remember, any SD monitor for the HVX-200 will be totally and completely useless for focusing, the color space will be totally off too (NTSC vs. HD color space)
The ones that are truly useful for the HVX begin at $1,500.00 and go up from there. All of the other HD designs have no 1:1 pixel setting, poor construction quality and too low resolution screens to be of much use. Also, most of the cheapo monitors have the video connectors soldered directly to the main board, meaning if you drop it or break a connector, you might as well throw it in the trash.
The most useful ones are:
The Carrion from LSDesign
The Nebtek NEB-70
The Panasonic BT-LH80Best,

February 10, 2008 at 7:46 pmNone of your listed monitors are pixel for pixel. You have to go up to 17″ to get that in 720p and 23″ for 1080. (There maybe something smaller out there but it is going to be pricely)
While I agree that the better the monitor more it will aid you in production and it is best to get the most you can afford, and you need to make an effort to afford a good monitor.
Practicing and getting to know your camera and monitor is even more important. By doing this you can get by with a less expensive monitor (not saying you should) But lets face it not everyone can buy a $1500 and up monitor.
Personally I would at least start with a monitor that accepts HD component signal, While it is not pretty it does aid with framing and focus if you are on a tripod.

February 11, 2008 at 2:56 pmHi Michael:
Not natively in display resolution, of course. But do the research, all of these monitors are capable of 1:1 through zoom or a dedicated function button. The only one I’m not sure if it a been implemented on yet is the Nebtek. Rob from Nebtek told me last year it would be implemented in January or February of ’08.
From what I am told, the focus on red on the Panasonic and the focus on white on the Nebtek are better aids for focusing than the 1:1 feature anyway.
Of course not everyone can afford $1,500.00 and up for a monitor, but you should know what you are getting if you buy a cheapo monitor, essentially something that is disposable. I would rather have a cheapo monitor than no monitor at all.
Best,
Dan

February 11, 2008 at 3:45 pmThanks for the clarifications. Finally found the LS Design website and that one looks really interesting.
[Dan Brockett] “I would rather have a cheapo monitor than no monitor at all. “ That was what I was trying to say.
For some reason everyone has to buy some cheap equipment before they buy the “right” stuff, monitors and tripods are the prime examples of this. with the relative cheap cameras like the HVX selling for around $5K it is hard for some people to spend $2-3K on a monitor and tripod.

You might want to look at this one. It’s not armoured like some more expensive ones but it does have BNCs for component input:
