Does a drive mount to the express card? Does the reader mount to the system FW bus and an external drive to the exp. card?

Take a look at Sonic Scenarist for Authoring and Cinema Craft for encoding. A lot of studios use highend encoders but this the combo listed about you can do anything you need to at a quality that can rival anything out of Hollywood. But Scenarist has a much higher learning curve than Encore or DVD Studio Pro. These are the top of the line for professional use for the masses.

This is kind of tough. If its the client’s idea normally it is not worth fighting. I might ask if they could use a better term than additional, maybe jr. editor or assistant. But this is a what goes around comes around kind of thing. I author a DVD for a client and they were a couple of fixes, simple edit and a composite mask to cover up a mistake, I guess I should have pull for a gfx credit. Man I wouldn’t even think of asking for that.
Just grin and bear it.

I had to set up my camera to dub a VHS and it only records to tape mode and not P2, I’m just using the camera as a converter so I set the camera to TAPE and went from camera to FCP via FW and it worked fine for Capture now.

I’m have a love/hate relationship with the Firestore. I have been burnt big time but that was a while back. Totally lost 2 different shoots (Cost me about $20K of business). One was in the earlier days when there seemed to be firewire issues. Had 3 camera/FS setups and they all were going in and out of record, in the dark durning a concert it is hard to figure out what is going on. The other was a user error with settings.
If you do use this device you HAVE to read the manual, FAQ and every other thing you can find before you go live. Once you get everything down it does work well but as stated not really for Run and Gun shooting.
If I had my choice I would shoot with P2 cards but if it makes more sense (Cheaper, even to rent a FS verse several P2 cards) I use the Firestore. Honestly there is something nerve wracking about any of the tapeless workflows.

Gary pretty much answered that question. IF you tether the camera’s component analog out you can capture with the IoHD in ProRes. But this is really only useful when you can lock down the camera for this type of setup. But this is bypassing P2 altogether (of course you can be recording to P2 at the same time, but there is no TC going from the camera to the Io.
The most use of the IoHD will be after you ingest the P2, you can set up a external monitoring with both HD and SD at the same time. Then mastering out to tape you have all the options to go to just about any deck/format needed. (no 4:4:4).
Most people with the HVX need to evaluate this purchase on the post side of life and probably not production/capture.
I will say one place where the tethered capture make a lot of sense is for green screen. To capture that with 10-bit ProRes would be worth any setup time you had to go through.
But a question that might be under the surface here. Does the IoHD help transcode DVCProHD to ProRes after the capture. The IoHD does nothing to help with computer based transcoding. If you log/transfer P2 to DVCProHD the IoHD will not help to convert that footage to ProRes in any way… Unless you have to systems and playout the DVCProHD on one and capture to the other in ProRes. I do this all the time for Downconverting and upconverting.But with doing it this way the compression and lack of color space is already there.

The other thing that would cause generation loss are things like, transitions, filters and effects, if added or changed with each generation.
