  • Wasn’t trying to be mean, your post didn’t seem like you knew that the specs said no and that you just wanted to know if anyone got around it. Sometimes it it worth trying to get an older systems you already own to work a little longer after they fall under some processor spec, but it is normally not a good idea to buy a new system that starts below spec, IMO. If you have any problems you are left out in the cold. The $2K 15″ MBP is were FCS starts at.

When you go to install FCS it looks for hardware, without seeing the graphic card it will not let you install Motion or Color.

  • the 13″ is now listed as a MBPro, and it does NOT have a discreet graphics card nor can it be ordered with one. The 15″ can be order with or without the discreet graphics card. Al the 17″ versions have a discreet graphic card.

    Please read more carefully-
    On 15″
All models: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
Selected models: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.66GHz configuration; or 512MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.8GHz and 3.06GHz configurations

    On 13″
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory

  • without a discreet graphic card, Motion and Color will not (should not) install.

If you simply go to the spec page of FCS it will answer your question.

Matt, I stand corrected, it can record both as AVC-I and DVCProHD, so the work flow can be simplified. The one great feature of the 300 is the longer lens.

No, I’m saying that that adapter is to convert a 30″ monitor to the new mini display port on the new laptops (and graphic cards) it does not adapt the new 24″ monitor to DVI, so the Apple 24″ can only be hooked up to the mini display port, there is anything on the market (that I know of at this time) to convert the monitor to a DVI port.

So your original question of can you use the apple 24″ with a MXO is no, but you should be able to use the Dell.

You should be able to hook up the MXO to the mini display port with one of the DVI to mini display port adapters. But there is no way to have 2 external monitors hooked up to any MBP.

The biggest issue you are going to have is a mismatched codec. The 300 will be ProRes vs. the 200’s DVCProHD. One of the other will need to be transcoded to the other format. (Oh, I wish Apple/Panasonic would make a way to transcode the P2 from the HPX170/HVX200 as ProRes on ingest)

That being said the HPX170 would match better but is not a full size camera. It is just the tapeless version of the 200 with some improvements. The HPX170 and HVX200 can have their TC jammed together via firewire (not the greatest since it can drift if the FW cable is removed). You probably can do the same thing between the 300 and the 200.

If you have the money and want the full size camera the HPX500 would be a better workflow match and people that can compared it to the HPX300 still like the 500 better.

    My 2 cents.

The question between the two programs is not what codec to deliver the final mov in but what codec do you need to edit the movie in. Express is very limited, it handles DV, HDV and Apple Intermediate and that is about it. So if you are getting DVCPro, ProRes and several other codecs it will not work without transcoding everything.

Also Express lacks Compressor, Motion, DVDSP and Soundtrack Pro. So you need to define what you need to be able to do in editing to determine which is better.

Express maybe fine if you are just cutting together DV or HDV footage.

[brad holmes] “2. Apple Mini Display Port to Dual-Link DVI Adapter” That is for the 30″ and is 3x the price and going to wrong way.

You need to get an adapter that mini display port cable to DVI if you are going from the 24″ to the MXO. And I don’t believe they are making that as of yet. So you will need to get a DVI monitor to connect to the MXO. A Dell 23″ will do.

The new 24″ look nice and bright but that is not what you want, it would be hard to judge color and saturation.

Seems like KRK are in a lot of editing suites. I have the v4s and they are great, I have had several audio engineers comment on how good and natural they sound.
