Recommended speakers/audio monitors
Posted by Ron Craig on June 12, 2009 at 10:17 pmI’ve never been happy with the speakers I’m using to monitor my audio while editing in FCP — which is why I do all my critical audio work on headphones.
I’d appreciate any suggestions for good/reasonably priced speakers. I would be running them off an analog Mackie mixer.
TIA

June 12, 2009 at 10:30 pmSeems like KRK are in a lot of editing suites. I have the v4s and they are great, I have had several audio engineers comment on how good and natural they sound.

June 12, 2009 at 10:33 pmHeadphones are great for hearing subtle problems, but don’t you find that mixing with them isn’t very real world? How many of your clients are listening to the result on headphones?
I’m using some of those Roland MA-12s that used to come with Avids. I find them a good middle range representation. When I listen to my mixes on super nice sound systems the mix is pretty much what I planned, and the mix on tinny tv speakers is pretty close too. As normal, the tinny speakers are more in tune with voice, so nat and music don’t pop as much as they do on the expensive surround sound systems. I try to mix the music and nat as hot as I can stand it, because either the client will ask to lower it, or it will vanish on the web or on tinny speakers.

If so, try the Audix Studio Series 1As. They work great for near field monitoring. I was a house engineer at a local, professional recording studio and our mastering engineer insisted on getting a few for the studio and they work great. I am not sure what they cost now, but they were reasonably priced at about $350 for the pair. They have a great frequency response and I actually a have a few for mixing and surround sound work. If you are using them for your home, they work great with a regular stereo system too. To buy a pair, you have to call and ask for them by name because they are not part of Audix’s regular production line.

We run KRK Rokit 5’s in all our edit suites as I find them to be the best sound for the best price.

June 12, 2009 at 11:53 pmThanks to all of you. Much appreciated.
And yes, I agree that headphones aren’t the optimal way to edit. But using them I was getting more reliable representation of the way my deliverables — usually web and computer-played material — were sounding in final presentation. More reliable, that is, that the speakers I was using.
Now..on to my speaker shopping.
– Cheers.

June 12, 2009 at 11:54 pmI have KRK in one suite and Blue Sky EXO in the other and Blue Sky has better fidelity to my ears. Blue Sky also has a cleaner look with less cables.

June 13, 2009 at 1:51 amEvent used to make KILLER small field monitors back in the day…. but lately all their cheaper offerings are, in fact, cheap.

June 13, 2009 at 2:10 amHi Ron,
I have used Mackie HR series monitors for a long time and LOVE them. If you can afford the 824’s get em but the 624’s will do you just fine for 99% of your work.
Good Luck on your quest!
