I’ll echo the endorsement for the KRK Rockit 5s. Bi-amped, so you wouldn’t need additional amplification. Certainly there are better/truer monitors, but the price/performance value of these speakers is pretty great. Plus I’ve had two situations lately where I’ve used them on location for audio reinforcement for small scale presentations

Thanks again. I followed the lead of all you KRK Rockit 5 aficionados and bought a pair. B&H had only a single one in inventory so they gave me a great deal on it. Got the other from Amazon at $149.

Personally I avoid B&H. In the future try Musicansfriend.com if you want to order online.

Hopefully you’ll get a matched set as they now have the generation 2 models out there. hopefully both of your units will be the same version.

Whoops… that was a close call. I didn’t even know about that. Doh! But I checked and they’re both G2. Thanks for the heads-up Walter.

I’ve always found the KRK’s to be pretty funky and muddy.

you should NOT by speakers without hearing them. in the cheap catagory, I bought several pairs of M-audio MA-5a’s as the cleanest and most neutral sound speakers in the catagory of less then $500/pair. until you listen to speakers side by side with know material ( take a CD with you and listen to dialog and acoustic guitars, maybe piano ) and then you will hear the difference.

for $500 ea, the dynaudio’s blow everything away for accuracy and actually having some natural low end.

I’ve got a set of B&H 5’s that are old, but you can listen to all day long. they don’t lie, or color the sound the way other speakers do. they do need their own amp, but not a big deal.

Agreed!!! M-audio has much greater dynamic range than KRKs.

Well, I’ll speak some sacrilege here: I don’t need the best speakers in the world. Yes, I do believe that audio quality is the most ignored aspect of many of the productions that I see. And I do think that good audio adds depth and value to almost any production.

    BUT…

Almost everything that I produce is viewed on the web. The speakers those productions play on don’t come close to reproducing what I hear in the studio — through almost ANY decent speakers. And, frankly, my clients almost never mention anything about audio. The audio quality I deliver is far superior to what they seem to be able to appreciate. And, by the same token, some contributors to this discussion board, I’m sure, have a higher level of appreciation for the subtle distinctions in audio than I have. That’s a good thing.

The KRK’s are sounding very good to me.

I agree. While I’d love to have the latest/greatest/best gear of all types, I have to continually balance price and performance, and ultimately the value to the customer. This is probably especially true in the corporate/industrial work where I make most of my money. With all gear, you have to know what it does and doesn’t do, and understand how to get the most from it to be able to deliver what the customer needs.

Would I like to mix on a $1000 pair of monitors (or $2K, or $10)? Of course. Do they sound better than the KRK 5s? Absolutely. But can I do a perfectly credible job for my clients on these $300/pair monitors? Yes.

The M-Audio BX5a speakers to which Steve was actually referring sell for only $299.
