[Jiggy Gaton] “u can’t close the app while compressor is working on the job. that’s a really silly design eh. “

won’t that be like expecting Motion or AE to keep exporting after it was closed. Send to is feeding the frames. Your work flow is there in the export a movie.

But It would be nice to have the export movie automated to where you set up the Compressor settings that automatically start once the entire movie is saved and that the exporting can happen in the back ground also. That would be the best of both worlds and maybe we will see that in FCP8.

What most people don’t realize is that compressor doesn’t actually do anything either, it is just a way to setup the encoding engine, which is who knows where. If you are encoding from a file, you can close compressor as soon as you submit the batch, it’s job is done.

FCP, Motion and STP are all basically non-destructive workflows so you will need to try something else.

The place I would try is QT Pro and Automator. I know you can open up a file in QT Pro and delete the audio tracks. So the question would be can you record steps in Automator to open each file, delete the audio and save the file. Don’t know the answer but that is what I would try if I were you.

July 13, 2010 at 9:39 pm in reply to: Good all around video lens..?

[Noah Kadner] “Think like a filmmaker not a photographer. “
And that is the key, think. This is why what lens do I need are so misleading. A master with a 50mm for outshoot a hack with a bag full of lenses. (not calling anyone here a hack) Why because he or she shoot while the capability of the equipment they have. they know what the lens can do. They find there voice with their equipment.

To throw in my 2 cents on zooms, many of the high-end $1-2K L lenses are not much of a compromise. Other than making your wallet a lot lighter. What they give you is speed, which maybe key to certain types of production. If you are shooting run and gun docs, have a 3x zoom many be crucial to getting the right shoot. So once again it comes down to find the right equipment for the job at hand and knowing how to use what you have.

July 13, 2010 at 9:26 pm in reply to: 7D vs T2I? Opinions?

I went with the T2i because of budget, if I had the money I would get the 7D without even thinking twice. Why, the quality of the build and waterproofing. I love to shoot in the rain, at least I use to.

But the great thing about this choice is that in the end it doesn’t matter. I can get the same video and the same stills with either camera. I would not want to see my camera dropped (t2i) nor would I stay out in the weather with it.

The other thing about the T2i that I don’t like is the placement of the batteries. It runs along the back of the camera vs perpendicular to it in the grip. This means more things have to be removed to get at the battery. Once again, nothing that makes it a bad choice, just something to think about if you have the money.

I love my T2i best thing I have purchased in a long time. There was no way I could spend the extra $900 for the 7D at that time. And I’m please enough with the T2i that there is no rush to move up. As extra money becomes available I would rather buy accessories, all of which will work on the 7D when I move up.

I like choices where there is no wrong answer.

July 13, 2010 at 9:16 pm in reply to: SD-DVD Possible or Computer Upgrade Needed?

First your problem will not be solved with new software of a new computer.

[Jake William] “saying there is a missing asset.”
Are you working with ref movies instead of self-contained now, that is normally what gives you that.

You need to export a self contained movie from the timeline with current settings. You take that into compressor and make the m2v, the one thing you must do it to set the field dominance to make your FCP sequence, which for 1080i is UPPER.

You can try a CBR encode and set the bitrate to 4.8 Mbps. Make sure you encode the audio as ac3 @ .192 Mbps. If you don’t think that is good enough try a VBR 2 pass with average set to 4.8 and max set to 7 Mbps. You can test a 15 minute section of the movie to compare.

Try that and let me know if that improves anything.

  • [Alexandra Hidalgo] “ditable mov file out of a Final Cut 6 sequence”
If that is your goal you just want to export the timeline as self contained with current settings. This makes a solid movie of your timeline at the best quality. The file will be big but you need that. If you compress it and then he compresses it quality goes out the window.

One thing to watch out for, if the other person is not using FCP and you are using ProRes he will need a codec to play your movie and then he will have to transcode it to something else.

    Make sense?

Totally agree on the daisy-chaining, one of those, you can but you should never.

If you have a 17″ MBP you have a lot of options for drives (or at least more options) you can get a express34 eSATA card and RAID a couple of 1.5 TB drives to getting to even run 2 single drives. Since you are working with discreet ports (that are much faster than FW800) it will help things out big time.

July 13, 2010 at 8:59 pm in reply to: Converting 29.97 into 24fps

If you want quality you need to do it out side FCP.

Options – Compressor with Frame Control turned on. (reverse telecine only works on footage that WAS 24p and then had 2:3 or 3:2 pulldown added to make it 29.97)

    Red Giant Frames
    https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-frames/

The process is not quick to get quality but you convert the footage before you bring it into FCP. In this case quality means encoding time.

July 13, 2010 at 8:52 pm in reply to: Oops! Shot in both Anamorphic and Lettbox

If you are just looking at the footage in the canvas you are not looking at the actual quality. You need an external monitor to judge the quality. Going down with the anamorphic will be better than going up with the letterbox.

July 13, 2010 at 6:31 am in reply to: Compressor Problem!

There is no way that compressor strips out audio. It just doesn’t happen. Red slashes in FCP mean the clips are offline. As in they have been moved. You would reconnect the clips.

If you got have the h264 files on the card or copied in another place, they are what they are. I would not use iPhoto to off load my cards. I copy the entire card to a it’s own folder, and I keep the folder structure in tact. The FCP plugin needs the additional file to bring in the files as ProRes. This process also gives you a working copy of the media, adds TC to the clips and you can add info and notes to the clips.
