So, due to using my camera on two different projects, I ended up accidentally shooting one of those projects in both anamorphic and letterbox. At first I didn’t think it was too big a deal…I’d just edit on a 4:3 timeline and bump up the letterbox to match the anamorphic bars. However, I’ve now noticed a fair amount of degradation in the anamorphic footage while in the 4:3 timeline as opposed to being in an anamorphic timeline.

Basically, what’s the best course of action? I’d say most of the film was shot in anamorphic, but there’s at least one or two scenes that are about half and half. Is there any way to get the best resolution from both formats?

If you are just looking at the footage in the canvas you are not looking at the actual quality. You need an external monitor to judge the quality. Going down with the anamorphic will be better than going up with the letterbox.

Yeah, I’m just judging by what I see in the canvas. If I switch between the same shot in a sequence set for anamorphic and one set for letterbox, the one for anamorphic is a little clearer. I suppose that should be my first question: is if that’s just a FCP thing and it will all export the same?
