at higher bitrates there is not going to be too big of a difference. H264 is a new codec and can give you similar quality to mpeg2 at 1/2 the bitrate.

H264 is not an editing codec, especially with FCP

One thing you need to understand.
,mov is not a codec, all it means is that the file is a QT movie. there are 100s of codec. Most likely the codec is H264, all you need to do is to convert that to an editing codec. If you are editing with a DV timeline, convert the movie to a DV .mov.

That is why people need to think through their workflow. There are times and reasons to get it done in camera. But if you are shooting more of a movie or documentary where you need to cut together clips that are taken at different times and different places, you need more correction latitude, for that you need to shoot flat.
So one is right for a given situation but wrong for another.
So if you plan on doing a full color corrections you should be shooting flat.
If you need to process clips quickly and you are have a single setup then it might make more sense to shoot with a finish pic style.

there has never been a lens in that range that was considered to be of any quality. Plus they are slow lenses, stay away from them.Gear recommendations are all over this site. Jag35 gear is good quality but at the low end of the pricing scale. Zucato stuff at the high end. For handheld shoot even with a rig using lenses with IS is considered a must.
For the most part your thinking in the wrong directions, for video you need fast glass, adding a 2x extender kills the light and quality.
Spend more on quality glass, it is more important than the body.

1280×960 is not a normal video resolution. Closest HD video is 1280×720. So unless you convert your footage to a resolution like that you will always have playback troubles. When you convert from H264 to ProRes I would also change the resolution to 1280×720 which will crop off the top and bottom of the recorded image. (120 px top and bottom). This can be done in the Geometry tab, set the Dimension (encoded pixels) to 1280×720.
If the camera is recording compressed audio that you may want to change Audio passthrough to encode and setting to PCM.

#1 thing is with detail info on what workflow you plan to use, what level of editing you need any advice will be more of what others need or use.

His footage is progressive, that is a mis-statement.You want to keep it 24 Progressive all the way through the authoring process.
