  • BluRay encoding H.264 vs. MPEG2 – right forum?

Hi All – I don’t see a BluRay authoring forum, so thought I would post this here: in terms of pure quality, is there a consensus regarding the use of H.264 vs. MPEG2 for BluRay encoding on the way into Encore? I have a short program that I want to make sure appears at the highest possible quality and I don’t know if I see much of a difference between the two codecs, at a high data rate. Also, it’s not clear to me what the tradeoffs between one vs. the other might be, in terms of how they affect color representation, create artefacts, etc. etc. Any information anyone could give me would be great.

    Cheers,
    Steve

at higher bitrates there is not going to be too big of a difference. H264 is a new codec and can give you similar quality to mpeg2 at 1/2 the bitrate.
