Best quality and quickest way to upconvert is hardware.
You have not stated your framerates. But SD 29.97i and HD 59.94i is the same thing (but the field order is different.
I you don’t have the hardware I would suggest paying for the upconvert, if you have a finished SD movie that should not be too expensive.
If you want to do it with software you want to upconvert the SD with compressor with Frame Control or with better plugins that have better methods of upconverting. I would suggest trying InstantHD. Red Giant normally has demo versions of their software.

That is a non RT video resolution. If you cropped it to 1280×720 it would be much better but that is a progressive size.

These cameras are so cheap (it is all the extras the cost the real $) there really is no reason not to have a back up especially if it not a place you can just return to. Renting is a good option also. One between the 2 of you would probably be safe.
Years ago I was on a 3 day photo adventure in the Smokey Mountains, on the first day someone passing by my tripod kicked it and the camera casing broke. While I would a bit pissed about that being about to continue shooting on my second body at least the weekend one of the most enjoyable event I had.

Are you working with a DV codec, if so that can be it. I’m in NTSCland and DV hates red, anything solid will block up big time.
Also are you viewing this on an external monitor?

Do they? Funny I just up graded to CS5 from CS3 that I think I got about 4 or 5 years ago. Apple never talks to much about the Pro Apps until they are pretty close to releasing them.
