    Hello all,

I am working on a documentary divided in two parts: the first with SD footage (720×486) and the second with HD 1080i footage. All the footage from both formats were imported from raw quicktime files and are native to FCP. I chose to edit the two parts in different sequences with different sequence settings. What I want to do is combine the two sequences, retaining them both in the HD format while upconverting the 4:3 footage (adding black wings on either side). I will most likely scale up the SD footage to match the aspect ratio of the HD footage. Is there a way of doing this without a gigantic render of the SD sequence? Was there a smarter way for me to proceed with all of this in the first place?

Uh-oh…I just read that you cannot nest one sequence into another if frame rates don’t match. Hmm…

    Thanks!

Best quality and quickest way to upconvert is hardware.

You have not stated your framerates. But SD 29.97i and HD 59.94i is the same thing (but the field order is different.

I you don’t have the hardware I would suggest paying for the upconvert, if you have a finished SD movie that should not be too expensive.

If you want to do it with software you want to upconvert the SD with compressor with Frame Control or with better plugins that have better methods of upconverting. I would suggest trying InstantHD. Red Giant normally has demo versions of their software.

Thanks Michael. The SD footage is 30i while the HD footage is 24p.
