The only thing not automated is the naming the bin the same as the ALE file. You can drag and drop ALE files into a bin, one or many at once.

If you want a 1080p/23.976 master, I would suggest you work in a 23.976 project type and record audio at 48.048kHz. When importing those files into that project type, they will automatically be slowed down to 48kHz (.1%) to be in sync with film shot at 24fps and transferred at 23.976. Or if they sync in telecine, it is easy to reference and slow down .1% without doing a sample rate conversion in the process.

Not directly – you can export as QT reference to a third party application or open in QuickTime Pro and save as h.264.

Either because the material does have a combination of drop or non drop or perhaps it is switching to your default settings for logging (deck settings).

from here decide what type of export you need. -
Hmmm…. that is a different issue unrelated to Avid – if you can successfully make an output to DV, then Avid is out of the loop and the issue lies between your DST-11 and the VHS machine. I don’t know what to say here unless your VHS machine is out of skew or needs a really good head cleaning.

Avid doesn’t add copy protection… must be a time base issue between the Avid output signal and the VHS recorder… Can you run it through a time base corrector?

The “duplicating” process mathematically deinterlaces the 30 frame timecode to 24 taking the pulldown cadence into consideration when doing so. This way you have a frame accurate tracking of the 24 frame HD masters as well as being able to track the 30 frame sources from which you digitized. This process is done during the duplication from the START to the TC 24 column. The same can be done for conversion to PAL 25fps.
No disadvantage between download as far as the application itself. Even updaters are full installers so no need to have a previous version online in order to upgrade.
