Thank you very much – folks on this forum have helped a lot. So let me see if I’ve got this right…. DP will be shooting HD-CAM at 23.976 (Panavision, F900). In Avid I will create a 23.976 timeline. I will rent a Sony JH-3 and digitize DV25 (video, timecode and all, right?) via firewire. Now, is there anything I have to watch out for, like…

    – …timecode options on the JH-3? Or does TC to DV25 happen correctly magically?

    – On the JH-3 can I specify that the picture in standard def be anamorphic?

My understanding is that someday I can recapture the show in its native HD and all my titles, graphics and effects will magically fit, pixel for pixel. The plan is for this show to eventually go to a film print, among other things.

    Thank you!!!

    Hey Bill –

You have got to watch out for the 2 frame video delay to audio sync relationship that is part of he down conversion and 2″3 pulldown insertion (one frame for each process) if these are sync dailies. In the capture tool window, there is a menu for audio delay, set it to two frames.

The NTSC down convert will always be 30fps NDF, and that is how the capture will happen. Make sure you set your Film/24p settings to “A” frame relationship for 00:00:00:00 and Cadence is set to NORM.

Once captured, you highlight the entire START timecode column and do a ctrl-D (duplicate) and select TC 24 from the list that pops up. This will convert the 30fps back to 24 reversing the same process that went from 24 to 30 during the down conversion.

You can specify anamorphic 16:9, letterbox 16:9, or 4:3 center crop for the down conversion, but you will want to do 16:9 anamorphic in order to have a pixel perfect conform of all effects, titles, etc.

Well, good to know. Vital to know, in fact. Curious – what is one “duplicating” when one duplicate’s timecode to reverse it?

The online upgrade to Xpress HD is astonishingly cheap. Is there a disadvantage (besides the books and CDs) to online update versus box update versus full new 5.2?

    As always, Michael, thank you…

The “duplicating” process mathematically deinterlaces the 30 frame timecode to 24 taking the pulldown cadence into consideration when doing so. This way you have a frame accurate tracking of the 24 frame HD masters as well as being able to track the 30 frame sources from which you digitized. This process is done during the duplication from the START to the TC 24 column. The same can be done for conversion to PAL 25fps.

No disadvantage between download as far as the application itself. Even updaters are full installers so no need to have a previous version online in order to upgrade.
